The brand kept its headquarters in Adelaide even as it built a following well beyond Australia, working from a design philosophy built around ease and confidence rather than a single signature print or silhouette. Andrea Gomez Shoes

Andrea Gomez studied jewellery design in Florence as a teenager, then at FIT in New York and the London College of Fashion, and worked at DKNY before launching her own shoes. She started in Caracas in 2011 with her sisters Leonor and Mariela, then relaunched the line in New York for spring 2017. Everything is made in a small family-owned factory near Alicante in Spain.

Heribert Engelbert, a trained goldsmith, opened his jewelry business in Stockholm in 1920, and the company has stayed in family hands for four generations since. It survived a mid-century pivot into wedding and engagement jewelry set with diamonds at a time when Scandinavian bands were traditionally plain gold, plus a stint operating a Fifth Avenue office in New York in the 1960s under brothers Lars and Peter Engelbert.

Amina Muaddi Heels and Shoes

Amina Muaddi was born in Romania in 1986 to a Jordanian father and a Romanian mother, studied fashion communication at IED in Milan, and worked as an assistant stylist at L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Italia and American GQ. She then spent a year learning shoemaking from artisans in Riviera del Brenta, co-founded Oscar Tiye, left it, and launched her own label in August 2018.

Aliita was founded in Milan in 2015 by Cynthia Vilchez Castiglioni, who grew up in Maracaibo in Venezuela and studied fashion marketing at IED before working at Vionnet, Miu Miu and Jil Sander. The name is both an anagram of Italia and a Wayuu word for an important object, after the Guajiro people of Zulia where she was raised.

Marlies Grace Bags and Dresses

Verena Martin founded Marlies Grace around 2022 and named the label after her late mother, Marlies, whose own parents ran a fashion store in Soest, Germany. Martin built a point of view on nostalgia and European reference points rather than any single trend cycle.

Aisha Baker is a Dubai high-jewellery house founded in 2017 by the Emirati entrepreneur Aisha Bakhtiar with the designer Hoonik Chang, who trained in jewellery at Central Saint Martins. The pieces are built as narratives, with fairy-tale and fantasy themes running through collections released in tiny editions.

Reema Chopra founded Khepri Jewels in New York in 2023 after leaving a career that ran from private banking at CIBC to years of diamond wholesaling and gemstone sourcing on the city's diamond district, and getting GIA-certified as a gemologist along the way. The brand is named for the ancient Egyptian sun god of rebirth, and that idea is literal in its origin story: Chopra's first meaningful piece came from repurposing a friend's engagement ring into a necklace after a divorce.

Catherine Sarr founded Almasika in January 2014 and debuted it at Colette in Paris, after more than a decade in the diamond and fine-jewellery industry including several years at De Beers and at LoveGold. The name joins almasi, Swahili for diamond, with sika, a word for gold across several West African languages.

Sisters Nicole and Kim Carosella, both New York natives, launched Sorellina in the early 2010s, starting with pieces made by melting down and resetting stones from their mother's old jewelry. Nicole trained in jewelry fabrication at FIT while Kim handled the business side, and the label's name, Italian for younger sister, nods to their own family shorthand as much as their heritage.

Aje was founded in 2008 in Noosa by Adrian Norris and Edwina Forest, after Norris could not find resort-to-city clothing to stock in Strada, the boutique he had opened there. The name is a contraction of Adrian joins Edwina, and it is pronounced age.

Merryn Kelly, a graduate of Sydney TAFE's fashion design program, founded Third Form in 2014 after working in design roles at Zimmermann, Shakuhachi and Lee Jeans. The label built its name on a contemporary, slightly edgy take on Australian womenswear, enough to earn a Vogue Australia nod for its cult following and a spot on Forbes' list of new Australian fashion names.

Aeyde was founded in Berlin in spring 2015 by Luisa Dames and Constantin Langholz-Baikousis, who met in 2011 working at Zalando, where Dames ran the private-label division and its production across India, Bangladesh and China. They launched with about twelve pairs of shoes made in family-owned factories in Italy's Marche region.

Pamela Zamore spent seventeen years running her own interior design firm in Boston before shifting into jewelry around 2014, first working in silver before moving the collection to 18 karat gold around 2023. Anabela Chan was born in Hong Kong, trained as an architect at the Bartlett and worked at Richard Rogers' practice, including on the Ground Zero project, before spending years as a print and embroidery designer for Alexander McQueen. She went back to study at the Royal College of Art, graduated in 2013, and launched a fine-jewellery house built on laboratory-grown gemstones and recycled metals.

Jade Ruzzo launched her eponymous fine jewelry line in New York in 2022, after a decade working at Conde Nast titles and as a personal stylist. The specific thing that drives the collection is family: pieces are named for and inspired by her late father Vic, a drummer, and her daughter Gloria, born in 2019, with the Percussion collection built directly around his cymbals and drum motifs.

Keane is the Brooklyn label started in 2017 by Colin Keane Lynch, who trained in glassblowing in Venice as a teenager and later at Rhode Island School of Design before a stint working retail in fashion, where he began experimenting with glass on the side around 2012. The brand still makes its jewelry and objects the same way, hand-blown glass paired with precious metals, in a studio near the Manhattan Bridge, with collections that have referenced everything from his father's home county of Kerry in Ireland to the psychedelic revolution and Japanese wagashi sweets.

Nak Armstrong Jewelry

Nak Armstrong trained as an architect at the University of Texas before a detour into New York fashion led him back to Austin, where a textile company he ran with a partner pivoted into jewelry by the late 1990s under the name Anthony Nak. After that partnership ended around 2009, Armstrong spent two years developing a new direction and launched his eponymous label in 2011, quickly picked up by Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman.

Elie Saab opened his first atelier in Beirut in 1982, at eighteen, after a brief stint studying in Paris and against the backdrop of Lebanon's civil war. His signature was set early and never really wavered: Western silhouettes layered with Middle Eastern embroidery, beading and crystal work, the kind of dressmaking that turned him into the go-to name for red carpets and, in 1999, Queen Rania of Jordan's coronation gown.

Lafayette 148 Knitwear

Deirdre Quinn started Lafayette 148 in 1996 with clothing manufacturers Shun Yen Siu and Ida Siu, naming the label after the SoHo address where the three of them began with, as Quinn has told it, a desk and a phone in the middle of a garment factory. The brand built its own production facility in Shantou, China, making it one of the few fashion houses that is genuinely vertically integrated from design through manufacturing.

Rae Temily spent around fifteen years working behind the scenes for other labels, including co-founding the resortwear brand Kalita, before launching her namesake house in New York in April 2025 exclusively through Moda Operandi. Her debut collection, The Body Electric, was built around a satin maxi dress called Summer Bones, and reportedly sold out three separate times, with its first colorway gone in about three hours.

Paco Rabanne, born Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo and trained as an architect, founded his house in Paris in 1966 with a debut collection of dresses built from metal and plastic plates linked like chainmail, a look Coco Chanel reportedly dismissed by calling him a metal worker rather than a couturier. The house's futurist, industrial materials went on to dress Jane Fonda in Barbarella, and after Julien Dossena was named creative director in 2013 the label sharpened that archive into contemporary ready-to-wear before dropping Paco from its name in 2023.

Taylor Sade started Vertigo in 2021 after buying out a closing lapidary's stock of oversized stones on a trip home to Phoenix, Arizona, then teaching herself to string beads despite having studied communication design at Parsons rather than jewelry making. She built the brand between Phoenix and New York, chunky amulets, medallions and hip belts in stones like turquoise, malachite and lapis lazuli, and a 2023 New York Times profile naming her pieces the necklace of the moment prompted her to quit her day job and run the label full time.

Pierre Balmain opened his own house in Paris in 1945, after training under Lucien Lelong, and built it on sculpted tailoring and a nipped waist that landed just ahead of Dior's New Look. Olivier Rousteing took the label somewhere louder starting in 2011, layering heavy embroidery, sharp shoulders and a streetwear-literate edge onto Balmain's couture bones over his fourteen years there.

Matthew Harris, who goes by Mateo, started making jewelry for himself in Brooklyn in 2009, the story goes that a screw fell out of a wall while he was moving apartments and he turned it into a necklace. He is self-taught, and the label he eventually built stayed men's-only until 2014, when he launched a women's fine jewelry line after Rihanna was photographed wearing one of his pieces.

Rachel Comey, a University of Vermont sculpture major who moved to New York in the late 1990s, launched her label with a menswear show staged on a Tribeca street in September 2001, days before hand-painting shirts for David Bowie got her noticed and got her fired from her day job at Theory. She expanded into womenswear in 2004, and the brand has kept its downtown-arts-scene, hand-crafted, slightly off-kilter identity while staying fully independent for over two decades.

Nada Ghazal spent a decade in Dubai advertising, rising to senior art director at Impact BBDO, before returning to Beirut in 2003 to design jewelry instead. Her first collection, twenty five handmade pieces in eighteen karat gold wire called Organised Chaos, reportedly sold out within days of its December 2003 debut, and she opened her first Beirut boutique and atelier the following year.

ILA Dresses and Jewelry

ILA was founded in Houston in 2007 by Vikas Sodhani, an MIT engineering graduate who left the dot-com industry, apprenticed at a diamond-cutting facility in Mumbai, and taught himself to design jewelry from there. The label is named for his sister Ila Sodhani, who joined as design collaborator, and it still makes every piece by hand in that same Houston studio, drawing on a family already steeped in the diamond trade.
