WOLF

WOLF

WOLF was founded in 1834 in Hanau, Germany by the silversmith Philipp Wolf I, who began making boxes to present his silver pieces. The family firm, now in its fifth generation, is known for protecting treasures in a fine case, from the music box with the turning ballerina to a patented watch winder that counts turns per day. This edit gathers jewelry boxes, Brogue watch winders and rolls, travel jewelry portfolios, zip cases and small leather goods.

Jewelry travel cases in ivory, burgundy, silver and green arranged in calm styled interiors.

Jewelry boxes with a long memory

WOLF began in 1834 in Hanau, Germany, when the silversmith Philipp Wolf I started making boxes to present his silver pieces. I love that the whole business grew out of a simple idea: something fine deserves a fine case to live in. It stayed a family firm for five generations, moving from Germany to Sweden and then to England, and one of those generations gave the world something genuinely charming. Philipp Wolf III is credited with inventing the music box with the turning ballerina, which is why the Ballet Cinderella and Ballet Sleeping Beauty musical jewelry boxes feel like a piece of the founding story rather than a novelty. The jewelry boxes also use the patented LusterLoc lining, made to prevent tarnish, so the silver and gold that goes inside stays bright. For everyday dressers there are the Zoe large box, the Palermo medium box, the Bella, the Savanna print medium box and the Ida trunk, with a vegan leather version of the trunk too. The Lauren extra-large box is the one for a serious collection, and the VAULT stackable collection lets you build the storage drawer by drawer. If your pieces are mostly chains, my tennis necklace guide shows what tends to need the most careful storage. Watch people are covered too, with the Palermo 6-piece watch box and the Axis 10-watch box with a drawer.

Watch winders and rolls

The workshop moved from boxes into watches, and the 2009 patented winder that counts turns per day is the proof. The Brogue range is the heart of it, from the single winder to the double and triple winders with storage, up to the 8-piece winder for a full collection. For a lighter way to carry a favorite, the Brogue single watch roll, the Earth single watch roll and the Brogue zipped watch case are made to travel. The 2 piece Brogue zip case is the neat answer for a weekend with a dress watch and a sport watch. A simple test for any winder is to look at where it will sit: choose the one with storage if a bedroom shelf is the only space you have, because it keeps straps and spares in the same place. Anyone dressing the wrist should also see the round dress watch edit for the cases that suit a quiet leather strap.

Travel jewelry cases

Jewelry that leaves the house needs its own soft landing. The Zoe embroidered travel jewelry portfolio, the Bella jewelry portfolio and the Ida travel jewelry portfolio are the soft, flat way to carry pieces, while the Bella zip case, the faux-leather Bella zip case and the Ida travel zip case with handle zip everything shut. The Vault tray necklace insert and the Vault tray bracelet insert are practical add-ons for the stackable boxes at home. What I would skip is packing a long necklace in a small zip case with bracelets, because chains tangle fastest when they share a pocket, so give necklaces the insert and let the rest ride in the portfolio. Beside these, the flat zip pouch edit has more thoughts on what rides well in a bag.

Cases, portfolios and a few surprises

The WOLF idea of protecting what matters stretches beyond jewelry here. The Liberty small travel zip case, the Maria medium zip case and the Signature travel case are the classic shapes. The Lauren large vegan leather portfolio, the Zoe portfolio and the Savanna print travel portfolio are the roomier choice. Then the list gets fun: the Philipp hip flask in 6 oz. carries the founding family's first name, and the X WM brown humidor shows how far the firm's box making has traveled. These feel like gifts that someone would keep for years. When I think about what a packed bag needs, I think of the toiletry bag edit, and these cases sit well beside it.

The last group is the everyday end of the brand. The W leather gusset card case and the W leather molded card case slip into a pocket. The Savanna leopard print long zip wallet is the bold one, and the W leather laptop sleeve brings the same care to a work bag. The Signature passport holder, card holder and luggage tag gift set is a tidy way to start a trip, and for a closer look at that category there is a guide to passport holders. Zoe and Lauren travel zip cases and the extra large Ida jewelry trunk close the list for people who like their things in order.

The pieces I would build around

If I were building a WOLF set, I would begin with an Ida trunk for the dresser and a Brogue watch roll for the weekend bag. A Bella zip case would cover the necklaces on the road, and a leather card case would keep the habit going in a pocket. That is the same instinct Philipp Wolf I had in 1834, now made for how we travel and dress today, with something fine to hold every special thing.
