With Nothing Underneath Shirts: Cotton and Linen Basics

With Nothing Underneath Shirts: Cotton and Linen Basics

Pip Durell, a former Vogue stylist and Tatler editor, launched With Nothing Underneath in London in 2017 after years of wearing men's cotton shirts to work because she couldn't find a well-made equivalent cut for women. The label started with a single shirt style in three colorways, sourced through a manufacturing agent in Porto, before growing into a wider wardrobe of tailoring built on that same menswear-inspired logic.

Tops and shirting

Shirting is the category the brand was actually built on, born from Durell adjusting men's shirts for herself long before she had a company to put her name to. The cut she landed on, roomier through the cuff and shoulder than most womenswear shirting, is still the clearest through-line in the collection.

Trousers and shorts

Trousers followed the shirts once the brand had proven its point, extending the same borrowed-from-menswear logic into tailoring that avoids anything fussy or overtly feminine. It is a fairly disciplined expansion for a label that started with exactly one product.

Weekend shirts and a striped sweater

The rest of the edit shows how far Durell has stretched a magazine editor's eye for styling into a genuinely full wardrobe, well past the single shirt the brand launched with in 2017. The common thread across categories is still that early instinct: dress like you borrowed it from someone with better tailoring than you.

The shirt earns its place

A stylist starting a shirt brand because she was frustrated with her own closet is a familiar founding myth, but this one is well documented and the shirts back it up. The brand's rapid growth owes a lot to high-profile fans, which is worth knowing, but the tailoring itself is the part that actually holds up. When With Nothing Underneath’s well-cut shirts are already in my plans, I’d round out the look with the trousers edit for a pairing that feels considered but easy.
