This winter sneakers edit covers waterproof pairs, dark suede, trail soles, shearling-lined high tops and sneaker boots for cold and wet days. I explain how the membrane works and how to care for suede, so you know what to look for.

Winter Sneakers: What Bob Gore's 1969 Stretch Did for Your Wet Commute
Waterproof sneakers, and why they work
One night in October 1969, in Newark, Delaware, a chemist's son named Bob Gore got frustrated with a rod of PTFE. Slow stretching had failed, so he stretched it as rapidly as possible, and instead of snapping it expanded. Gore's own history page says that discovery opened the door to GORE-TEX fabrics. It is the quiet reason a pair of winter sneakers can now walk through slush without turning into a sponge.
The family company, W. L. Gore, started in 1958 in Bill and Vieve Gore's basement, and the membrane is still its best-known idea. It is a thin film with about nine billion pores per square inch, each 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, so rain and snow stay out. The same pores are 700 times bigger than a water vapor molecule, so sweat can leave. That is the whole trick, and it is why I trust a membrane more than a shoe that is merely wiped with a coating.
Now the pairs. The Nike Pegasus 42 GORE-TEX in black with a pink accent and the adidas Hyperboost GTX in all black are the closest thing to a runner you can wear on a wet commute. The HOKA Clifton 11 GTX in Alabaster and Pink Opal is the soft, cream one I would put with a gray puffer and straight jeans. The Salomon XT-6 Gore-Tex in black and silver suits a long coat and wide trousers, and the UGG Lowmel Guard GTX in chestnut is the one for people who want a lug sole without the sport look. The ECCO Soft 7 Tred in taupe adds a fleece lining for the coldest mornings.
One practical note from the running world: waterproof shoes keep heat in as well as water out, which is a gift in October and a nuisance in a heated office. Bring a thin pair of socks for the train.

Dark suede sneakers that handle gray days
Suede and winter have a complicated relationship, and the care advice is blunt. One shoe guide says it is not generally recommended to wear suede in the snow, because the salt from ice melt can dry it out and leave permanent staining. So I treat dark suede as the shoe for cold, dry days and damp ones, not for the morning after a salting truck.
Dark tones forgive a lot. The Blondo Carmen in black suede is the sensible start, since it carries a waterproof treatment and a gum sole. The adidas Handball Spezial in brown with a gum sole looks right under cuffed corduroy, and the Vince Oasis Runner in black suede and nylon with its cream stripe works with a camel coat. The Vionic Walk Slim Glide in olive moss suede is the quiet one for gray knit sets, and the Sam Edelman Langley in black suede sits well under wide-leg trousers. The Samba OG in black leather with suede overlays is the lower-maintenance choice, because most of the shoe is leather.
The routine, if you do get caught: let them dry fully, brush off the surface salt with a suede brush, then blot the mark with a cloth dipped in suede cleaner or white vinegar. Once clean and dry, a clear protector spray goes on. Test any liquid on the inside of the heel first.
What I would skip: pale suede in a month of sleet. Dark brown, black and olive hide a tide line far better.

Trail sneakers for city winters
A lugged sole is the most useful thing a sneaker can borrow from the mountains. If a tag mentions Vibram Arctic Grip, that is a sole technology the brand describes as engineered for wet ice, paired with a second compound for dry ice, and made for low temperatures. Ordinary city rubber does not promise any of that, so check the outsole before you check the color.
Trail pairs make practical sense on pavement: deep tread, firm heel, and uppers that shrug off a puddle. The Salomon XT-6 in Tapioca has the quicklace system and a lugged outsole, and it is the cream one I would pair with a black puffer. The HOKA Mafate Speed 4 Lite in chocolate brown reads almost like a boot with the right trousers. The Nike ACG Pegasus Trail in Spruce Fog and the ACG Zegama in gray-green camo suit utility pants and a fleece. For genuinely wet days, the Saucony Excursion TR18 Gore-Tex and The North Face Altamesa 500 V2 Gore-Tex both carry the membrane, while the On Cloudsurfer Trail 2 in all black is the sleek, low one.
Here is the fitting-room test: flex the sole, then tap the lugs on a hard floor. If every step feels like a hiking boot, the tread is deeper than your day needs.
What I would skip: a mesh trail runner with no lining on a below-freezing morning. Pick a lined or Gore-Tex version instead.

Shearling-lined and high-top sneakers
Mesh is where winter sneakers go wrong. RunRepeat notes that in climates that dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit a less breathable shoe may actually be more beneficial, and that highly breathable shoes with thin socks can leave your feet uncomfortably cold. A high top and a lining solve that without a single technical term.
Start at the practical end. The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top in black canvas is the simple one, best with thick socks and straight jeans. The Candice Cooper Runlo is a dark brown waterproof high top with genuine shearling inside, which is the one I would reach for in a real cold snap. The Veronica Beard Valentina is an espresso suede slip-on with a shearling lining and a gum sole, and the Voile Blanche Julia adds a shearling collar to tan suede. The Stuart Weitzman Bond Sport has genuine shearling trim on brown leather, the Taos Winner is a black leather high top with a side zip, and the REMONTE Maditta 82 adds a lug sole. The Voile Blanche Ines in faux shearling is the lighter, vegan-leaning option.
Fitting test: put on your thickest sock first, then lace up. Shearling takes up room, so you want a snug heel and a little space at the toe.
What I would skip: a lining so bulky that you have to loosen the laces to the last eyelet. Go up half a size or choose the trim version.

Sneaker boots for the coldest days
Sneaker boots are the compromise I come back to every winter: the lacing and the sole of a trainer, with ankle coverage. Rubber matters most here, because ordinary soles can feel slick on cold sidewalks, so look for a deep, soft-looking tread and a flat heel.
The Forsake Patch II is a black leather waterproof mid with tan laces and a lug sole, the closest to a hiker. The Sorel Ona Ave Waterproof Zip Mid in black and gum is the easy zip-up one for rushing out the door. The Taos Trail Mix in dark gray suede is a lighter mid-top, the On Foot Touch in navy suede has cream laces and a low profile, and the Forever and Always Oleta in brown suede has a hidden wedge for height. For the snowiest forecasts, the INUIKII Curly Rock in blush shearling with gold studs is the statement pair. The Voile Blanche Club Aspen in cream and silver has faux fur trim, and The North Face camel mid-top is a waterproof pair with a faux shearling collar and a lug sole.
Style them with a midi skirt and thick tights, or cropped trousers that sit above the ankle so the collar shows.
What I would skip: a suede boot with no waterproofing in a salted city. Choose a waterproof leather mid instead.

How I would choose my winter pair
I would begin with the weather. Wet and slushy: a Gore-Tex or waterproof pair from the first section. Cold and dry: shearling-lined or a dark suede with a protector spray on it.
Then check the sole and the lining before the color. A good outsole grips, a good lining keeps the cold out, and everything else is styling. If a pair passes both, I would happily wear it from the first cold snap through to the last salted sidewalk of March.
Bob Gore was only trying to stretch a rod of PTFE. A pair of sneakers that keeps your socks dry on a gray October commute is a decent legacy.
