The Leather Skirt Has Range, And It Knows It

The Leather Skirt Has Range, And It Knows It

Leather skirts come in faux leather, suede and polished leather, in pencil, midi, mini and long column cuts. I sorted them by texture first, then by length.

Leather has range

A leather skirt works hardest when its surface does the talking and the rest of the outfit keeps quiet. What I like about this category right now is how honest the range has become. The faux versions name their material plainly, suede has come back in soft browns and creams, and polished leather now comes in every length from a five-pocket mini to a column that grazes the ankle. That range is not a ranking. It is a reminder to decide first whether you want a trend experiment, the softer hand of suede, or a piece you plan to wear for a decade.

The first grid is the broadest. Alice + Olivia's pleated faux leather skirt brings movement, All Three's Tirza is a suede mini, and Altuzarra's Varda is the maxi to build a winter around. Brandon Maxwell's Lex pencil mini and Joseph's Riya midi are the quiet ones, and Arma and The Frankie Shop do croc-effect for anyone who wants texture without a print.

A test I like: sit down in it before you take the tags off. Leather does not give the way wool does, and a pencil skirt that fits standing can pull at the seams when you sit.

What I would skip: a leather skirt and a leather jacket in the same shade. Mix in a matte knit or a crisp cotton shirt instead.

Pencil lines and longer midis

Pencil skirts keep the leather quiet, while the longer midis let the material do more of the talking. Pick the length you already wear in other fabrics and the leather skirt will feel familiar rather than like a costume.

This grid leans toward midi and pencil shapes. Max Mara's leather midi and Toteme's paneled midi are the most wearable, Khaite's Loxley is a sharp pencil, and Nour Hammour shows up again and again for good reason, with straight midis, a pencil and a pleated mini in turn. Rabanne and Emilia Wickstead take croc-effect leather in a dressier direction, and Joseph's Helius is the clean one I would wear to an office.

A pairing I like: a leather midi with a fine-gauge turtleneck in the same tone and a flat boot. It looks considered and takes about four minutes.

What I would skip: a chunky knit tucked into a pencil skirt. The bulk at the waist undoes the line the skirt is there to give you.

More leather and suede, from minis to columns

For this last group I went to FWRD, the designer side of Revolve, and came back with the full spread. Helsa's Svelte midi in cognac and St. Agni's rum column skirt are the two I would reach for first, clean, high-waisted and easy with a knit. Nour Hammour's cream suede column and SRG's tan suede maxi are the soft, long version of the trend, and St. Agni's suede circle skirt is the one that moves. KHAITE's Jett skirt in dark olive is the colour I did not know I wanted.

The minis run from sleek to playful. Bottega Veneta's lambskin A-line is the pure version, AGOLDE's recycled leather five-pocket mini is the everyday one, and Magda Butrym's bordeaux mini with sculptural flower appliqué and Blumarine's fringe skirt are for a night out. Saint Laurent's belted skirt with side-zip pockets and Miu Miu's waxed cognac suede are the collector pieces.

A test I like: run a fingertip lightly across suede. If the mark brushes away, the nap is good. If it scratches pale, it will show every bag strap.

What I would skip: suede on a day with rain in the forecast. Wear the smooth leather instead.

Buy it for your actual week

A leather skirt is worth it when you already know where it fits in your week, not because a dramatic photo has briefly rewritten your calendar. I would skip faux leather if its feel is the very thing you dislike, and skip the most delicate suedes if your climate makes them a once-a-year piece.

Pick the length that works with shoes you own, then wear it with one calm knit and stop there. You do not need a second statement piece to prove the first one was a good decision. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Suede Skirt and Drop waist skirt.
