The artsy friend is the one whose outfit looks like she made it up that morning. I think the secret is one loud print and one calm piece, then a surprise at the edges, like an embroidered flat or a beaded bag.

 

Start with a skirt that moves. Zimmermann's scarf-print midi is a painting you can walk in, and the plum-and-lace Sablyn skirt is lovely with a plain white tee. On top I like a shirt that does a little more than a plain button-down, such as the polka dot Nili Lotan or the striped TWP, worn half tucked. Add an oversized blazer, Ganni's striped one if you want pattern or a crisp white one if you want it quiet. Finish with Flabelus embroidered flats or Pamela Munson's floral clutch, and let the rest of the outfit stay simple.
