Sold Out NYC Tops: What to Buy First Today

Sold Out NYC Tops: What to Buy First Today

Sold Out NYC is an Australian-born, New York-based label that started with a statement T-shirt and grew into very wearable basics. I like it for tops, knits and dresses you would actually reach for twice.

A basic is not the same as a blank

I like a label that knows the difference between a basic and a blank, and Sold Out NYC does. Kiane von Mueffling started it in 2017 with statement T-shirts, a product she already loved, after a career in finance and strategy. She went from concept to a T-shirt line in about six weeks, which tells you how clear the idea was. The appeal was practical from day one: she wanted to make the pieces she reached for herself.

That origin still explains the range, from The Long Sleeve Perfect Tee to the cashmere knits and a button-down called The Everything Shirt. The team talks about attention to detail and refusing to rush or chase trends, and that matches what I see. Her analytical background seems to have found a home in fit, fabric and sensible inventory, not in a constant stream of newness. Creative director Kate was there at the start too, and the company stays self-owned.

Tops that earn their place

The Cashmere Polo and The Cashmere Signature Crew are the soft anchors for me, and The Classic Rugby Polo takes the same knit idea somewhere sportier. The Long Sleeve Perfect Tee and The Everything Shirt are the quiet core, the things that make an outfit work without being noticed. The Soiree Strapless Top is the after-hours one, and it is a nice surprise from a label that began with a T-shirt.

Picture her leaving work in The Everything Shirt with the sleeves rolled, then meeting friends without changing the whole outfit. What I would skip: pairing The Soiree Strapless Top with anything loud, because it has plenty to say alone. I would also check that a cashmere polo sits comfortably under the coat you plan to wear over it. One good top should work with more than one pair of trousers.

From a dinner dress to the ride home

The RSVP Dress and The Soiree Dress are the evening pieces, both in black, and their names suggest two different kinds of invitation. The Refined Cardi and The Cashmere Signature Cardi give you two ways to layer, one black and one charcoal. The Cashmere Turtleneck is the close-fitting knit, and The Everywhere Pant in fawn brings a tailored line to the mix.

I like seeing the basics point of view stretch into dresses without losing the comfort of a layer. In my fashion dreams, she slips a cardigan over The RSVP Dress for the cold ride home, then wears The Everywhere Pant with a simple top the next morning. My test before buying a second dark knit: name the specific outfit where it would do a different job from the first one. If you want to keep going, Lisa Says Gah Dresses and Tops: What I'd Buy First is the one I would read next. I went deeper on a related idea in Darlin Tops: What I'd Actually Wear Today.

The pleasure of a well-made repeat

I come back to Sold Out NYC for the confidence of a piece that does not need a new styling trick every week. The label started with one clear idea, a T-shirt the founder wanted to wear herself, and the newer knits and dresses keep that personal scale. I would start with the top you reach for most, then look for one detail in the cut or the fabric that makes this version worth repeating. Getting dressed can stay simple without feeling anonymous. Although I will admit the cardigans make that argument best.
