Every group of friends has one bag that keeps changing hands. Someone borrows it for a wedding, someone else for a weekend away, and it somehow never feels worn out. I look for the shapes that have already lasted: a Louis Vuitton Alma in monogram canvas, a Gucci pochette with a soft strap, a Celine saddle bag in Macadam canvas.

 

The Fendi baguette is the one my friends ask about, in mint green, and the Chanel canvas tote with its square stitching is surprisingly easy to carry every day. For a bag that is easier to share, I like the Prada Bauletto in a deep plum, which works with jeans and with a slip dress. Look for clean corners, sturdy handles and a color that goes with most of what you own.
