SELMACILEK Jackets: The Pieces Worth the Price

SELMACILEK Jackets: The Pieces Worth the Price

SELMACILEK is the Istanbul womenswear label of designer Selma Çilek, known for calm, feminine clothes and a strong jacket. I like how one detail gets to do the talking, and this edit is built around the jackets.

The Istanbul atelier behind SELMACILEK

I tend to trust a label more when it still works from the place it began, and SELMACILEK does. Selma Çilek opened her studio in Bebek, Istanbul, in 2013, under her own name. She came to fashion by a slightly sideways route, business studies first and then a design master's in Milan, which may explain how practical the clothes feel. In 2017 she took a spring collection to Fashion Week in Istanbul and a fall one to Paris, and her own history tells that story well.

The work is still rooted in Bebek. Each piece is designed in the Istanbul atelier and made in Turkey, with hand-stitched details and Turkish fabrics. The cuts stay simple so that a button, a collar or a well-placed drape can do the talking. I like the restraint: polished and feminine, but useful on an ordinary Tuesday. It is a quiet frame for the detail you notice when you get closer.

Outerwear with a clear point of view

Outerwear is where this clean line makes immediate sense. The Nayla Jacket is a good place to start, and the Cropped Trench takes the familiar trench into a shorter proportion. I like that the Storm Blue Jacket has color carry the interest without ornament, while the Lea Tan Leather Jacket and Cape Jacket are two very different answers to a colder day. The Bomber Jacket, Latte Jacket, Reign Jacket and Arles Jacket fill in the middle.

Picture her heading out in the Nayla Denim Jacket, a simple tee and tailored trousers, keeping the texture to one strong layer. The range runs from the Frosted Denim Jacket to the more dramatic Zenya Jacket in animal print, so it helps to decide whether you want the quiet workhorse or the coat that leads. My tip: try the shoulders and sleeves first, because those lines make a simple shape look intentional.

Trousers for a sharper everyday uniform

The pants are a useful counterpoint to the statement outerwear. The Aria Denim Pants are the everyday option, and the Reign Pants are the dressier route when jeans feel too casual. The Knot High Waisted Pants and High Waisted Flare Pant put the waist and the leg line at the center of the outfit. The Fringe Pant is the pair I would keep for a night when movement matters.

I would style the ecru pairs with a simple knit or a dark fitted top and let the shape hold its own. Picture her walking to dinner in the High Waisted Flare Pant with a clean shirt tucked in and a low heel. What I would skip: a flare with the hem too long for your shoes, since dragging is not a look.

Skirts that balance texture and pattern

With skirts, I decide first whether the outfit needs texture, color or a cleaner line. The Luxe Leather Skirt brings leather into the rotation, the Nayla Skirt keeps to a softer camel palette, and the Mini Skirt is the direct answer for a shorter hem. The Polka Blue Skirt is the one that shifts the mood with pattern.

Picture her in the Nayla Skirt with a fine knit and a long coat, on a day that moves from a meeting to a late lunch. The leather can go quieter with opaque tights and a simple top, so the surface stays in focus. I would balance a mini with a more covered top or a flat shoe, so the skirt feels relaxed and not dressed for a night out.

A few good pieces beyond the coat

This last set moves from tops to one dress and a trench, which feels true to the label's day-to-evening idea. The Cropped Cami Top and Strapless Top are easy partners for high-waisted trousers or a skirt already in your closet. The Monarch Top has a more considered shape, and the Monarch Bordo Elbise Dress brings the collection's color into a full look. The Khaki Terra Trenchcoat is the layer I would keep close for a change in weather. I went deeper on a related idea in MAY MASHIAH Tops: Evening Pieces Worth the Price.

Picture her in the Monarch Bordo Elbise Dress with a plain shoe and one small piece of jewelry, letting the rich color do enough.

Why the quiet line works

What I take from SELMACILEK is a way of editing, not one signature coat. Selma Çilek trained in design after studying business, then built a label around clear shapes, carefully handled details and production in Istanbul and Turkey. That gives the clothes room to move between work, dinner and the hours in between. If I were starting with one piece, I would choose the jacket I could wear three ways. Although I suspect the Cape Jacket would win me over first.
