Proper Footing

A tight edit of loafers, Chelsea boots, lace-up boots and leather sneakers for men who like well made shoes. Each pair works with jeans, chinos and suiting.

Good shoes do more for an outfit than almost anything else a guy wears. I keep a short rotation: a black loafer, a brown loafer, a Chelsea boot, one sturdy lace-up boot and a clean leather sneaker.

 

The G.H. Bass Weejuns are the ones I would wear with everything from gray flannel trousers to cuffed jeans, and Sebago and Ferragamo have the sleeker versions for when the occasion is a little dressier. Allen Edmonds makes a Chelsea that looks sharp with a suit and fine with denim. When the weather turns I switch to Red Wing's Iron Ranger, which breaks in beautifully and goes with a chunky sweater. On the casual side, a white GREATS or Polo Ralph Lauren sneaker keeps things easy. Look for clean soles and a leather that shows a little shine.
