Contrology's studio rule is grip, and these full-toe, half-toe, strappy and crew socks follow it for the reformer and the mat. Choose the pair that fits snug.

Pilates Socks: The Studio Rule That Began With Contrology
Contrology, Clara, and Your Feet
In 1926 Joseph Pilates emigrated to the United States with his wife Clara, and together they opened a body-conditioning studio in New York. He called his system Contrology, and the studio drew a lot of dancers who came for technique and for help recovering from injuries. Nobody in that room was thinking about a sock with dots on the bottom. I think about it anyway, every time I read a studio policy.
These days the reformer is the star, and its carriage is a smooth leather bed. One instructor quoted in Women's Health says normal socks on it can be very slippery and may lead to accidents, and the same piece says studios usually insist on grip for safety and hygiene. So pilates socks are not a trend you can wait out. They are the entry ticket, and October, with its cold walk to class, is a good time to pick a pair you actually like.
The full-toe pairs come first, because they are what most studios mean by the rule. The Bombas Studio Gripper Quarter in Pink Tulip is white with a small tulip print, which I would pair with black bike shorts and a cropped zip. The Bombas Gripper Ankle in Fog Harbor is a blue-gray with a tab heel and silicone grippers underfoot, a calmer pick for early classes. Both come in S, M and L, so check the size chart against your shoe size.
For a softer palette, the lululemon Find Your Balance Grip Tab Sock in pink and the Quarter in dusty rose both have dotted soles. The TAVI Savvy in black is the one I would toss in a gym bag without thinking, and the Fraise Flora with white daisy embroidery is the one for a pastel set. My tip: press the sole and look for grips running heel to toe, not a patch in the middle.

Half-toe and open-toe grip socks, sorted
A quick word on hygiene before the pretty ones. NBC Select quotes experts who recommend against toeless socks because they are not as hygienic on shared equipment. That is worth knowing, and it is also why half-toe styles sit in their own camp: some studios are fine with them, some are not, so read your studio's policy first.
ToeSox is the name most people reach for here. The brand was founded by Joe Patterson with a vision for better grip socks, and its five-toe design is built to keep the sock in place with no bunching or twisting. In this group the Elle in tan has a wide strap across the foot, the Luna in pink leaves the toes bare, and the Ivy in black has crossover straps over the instep. The Low Rise in black is the plainest, and the Bellarina in ivory looks like a ballet flat with a strap.
Arebesk makes the open-toe pairs that come as a two-pack. The fringe pair in black and gray is the playful one, and the Moto pair in black and light pink is sleeker. The Lutava open-toe ankle sock in beige, with a clear grip, is a quiet option under cream leggings.
What I would skip: open-toe pairs for a busy reformer class on shared equipment, unless the studio has told you they are fine. For a private session, a mat class or a barre class, they are the comfortable choice. Try them on with the leggings you plan to wear, and check that the strap does not dig at the arch.

Strappy ballet grip socks for the reformer
The ballet-flat sock is the part of this edit that looks nothing like a gym sock. It borrows its shape from the dance studio, where Pilates found its first devoted crowd, and the strap gives a low-cut sock a bit of structure to the look.
The Bombas Studio Gripper Ballet No Show in black has crossover straps, sweat-wicking yarn and secure heel grips. The lululemon Strappy in raspberry has a single crossover strap, and the FP Movement No Show in blackberry has crisscross straps and a dotted sole. The FP Movement Ballet Buti is a different animal: white, stretchy and mid-calf with a mesh overlay and a cutout at the instep. For Mary Jane lovers, the TAVI Chloe has a criss-cross cutout and the TAVI Emma has an open back with a strap over the arch.
I would wear the white Buti with a gray sweatshirt on the walk to class, and keep the black Bombas for under tailored track pants. The Souls gray ballet pair with a pale pink strap is softer, and the Arebesk Goddess is the one with a thin elastic ankle strap and a metal accent.
What I would skip: a pair that is loose anywhere. A trainer quoted in Women's Health says that if a sock is too big, the foot slides inside it and the grip shifts to the front or back of the foot. Pinch the heel and the toe, and buy the snugger size.

Crew and slouch grip socks for cold studios
Crew height is where I would start in a cold month. Higher socks keep your ankles warm between sets, and they look right with the leggings and shorts layering you already do in October. Clara Pilates had a reputation for adapting the work to the person in front of her, and a taller sock is the same idea: you choose the cuff that suits your day.
The lululemon Find Your Balance Crew in pink is the simplest, with grip dots underfoot. The FP Movement Super Stripe is white with black sport stripes and a ribbed cuff, and the FP Slouch in a light blue tonal has a ribbed slouch and a grippy sole. The TAVI Kai in olive adds arch support and cuff stripes. WellBeing + BeingWell makes a pale pink tube sock with double white stripes, in 80 percent cotton, 15 percent polyester and 5 percent spandex.
The Varley Grayson half crew in light gray marl is the quiet one, and the Souls Retro Crew has pink and blue stripes on cream. The Fraise Classic Crew in heather oat has compression arch support and an organic cotton blend with silver ions, a neutral that goes with most of what you own.
What I would skip: a slouch pair under snug tapered leggings, since the bunching will annoy you by the second set. Slouch is for wide-leg joggers. Try the cuff on your calf and sit in a deep squat, and see if it rolls.
Grip sock multipacks for the studio bag
A multipack solves the problem of the lone sock stuck in the washer. Three pairs means a sock for every class in the week, and most reformer studios ask for them anyway, so having extras is not indulgent.
Bombas has two: the Studio Gripper Ballet No Show 3-Pack in a black rose mix, with sweat-wicking yarn and heel grips, and the Quarter 3-Pack in white, gray and black with floral details. Fraise offers The Sterling Set in tonal grays and creams, and the Ballerine set of four, which has two slouch and two ankle pairs with bow details in Ivory, Primrose, Petal and Ribbon.
Pilates University 1883 does a 3-pack of crew grip socks in country-club prints, white, coral and green, made for pilates, barre and lagree. The pink and lavender quarter pair has sport stripes. TAVI sells the Savvy multi-pack in black, the sensible gym bag one. ToeSox's Bellarina half-toe multi pack in black, charcoal and pink is the one for people who already know they like the half-toe shape.
What I would skip: a pack of one color if your socks all end up in the same load. Mixed packs make pairs easier to find. Rotate them, and wash them as the brand says, so the grips keep their shape.

How I would choose a pair
I would begin with the studio's rule, then the sock. Full toe for a shared reformer, a snug fit, grips that run the whole sole, and a height that suits the weather. That is the whole checklist.
After that, buy the one you will actually put on. Black Bombas for a rushed morning, a pastel Fraise or a strappy FP Movement for a Sunday class, a three-pack so you are never caught short.
Joseph Pilates named his system Contrology, the study of control. A sock that stays put is a small piece of control, and it is a pleasant one.
