PanOxyl Face Wash: How Much Benzoyl Peroxide You Actually Need

PanOxyl Face Wash: How Much Benzoyl Peroxide You Actually Need

A face wash with benzoyl peroxide, like PanOxyl's 10% Acne Foaming Wash or 4% Creamy Wash, puts one acne ingredient to work in the shower. I trace the line back to Stiefel Laboratories, then go through the washes, bars, spot treatments and moisturizers.

Why one ingredient runs the whole PanOxyl line

In 1847, in Germany, a man named John David Stiefel started a business making soap and candles. Nobody would have called it a dermatology company. Within a few years it had drifted toward medicated soaps, and by 1966 it was selling Sulfoxyl Lotion, an early benzoyl peroxide and sulfur acne treatment. A candle shop turned into the house that taught dermatologists about benzoyl peroxide.

That lineage is why a PanOxyl face wash feels so single-minded. GSK bought Stiefel in 2009, and PanOxyl is now made by Crown Laboratories, whose name appears on the current FDA drug labels. Nearly everything comes back to one active ingredient at different strengths, and I appreciate a brand that knows what it is good at. The brand calls 10% the maximum strength available without a prescription. That is not automatically the strength you should buy.

The trick is to pick the strength before the format. The Acne Foaming Wash and the Acne Treatment Bar are the 10% options. The Acne Creamy Wash is 4% and the brand says it is built with extra emollients to fight dryness, which is why it is the one I would start with. The Acne Gel Wash for Face and the 2% Salicylic Acid Cleansing Bar use salicylic acid instead. The Clarifying Exfoliant and the Sulfur Mask are treatments, and the Acne Banishing Body Spray is for the body. I went deeper on a related idea in How to Use PanOxyl for Back Acne: Body Wash, Spray and Patches.

After the wash: spot care, moisturizers and mists

Start with the patch, not the wash, when there is only one blemish. A whole-face routine is a lot of chemistry for one bump.

PanOxyl has three patches for different times of day. The Daytime Invisible Patches with Salicylic Acid are meant to disappear under makeup, and the PM Blemish Aftercare Brightening Patches and PM Overnight Spot Patches are for bedtime. For a blemish that needs something stronger, the Acne-Prone Clearing Spot Treatment brings 10% benzoyl peroxide to a single spot, which is a smaller footprint than a whole wash.

Benzoyl peroxide dries skin, so the moisturizers matter. The Oil Control Moisturizer with SPF 30 mineral sunscreen is the daytime one, and the PM Balancing Repair Moisturizer with niacinamide is for night. Both are quiet, sensible companions to a wash.

For a quick reset, the Hypochlorous Acid Antimicrobial Purifying Mist and Sofie Pavitt Face's Fridge to Face Blemish Defense Mist are the two to reach for in a bag. Sofie Pavitt Face is the only non-PanOxyl label in this grid.

What I would skip: patches over skin that is freshly scrubbed or irritated. Wait for things to calm down first.

Clarifying cleansers from other brands

One rule for acne cleansers: match the acid to the skin, not the other way around. Benzoyl peroxide is one route to a clearer face and not the only one.

Salicylic acid is the oil-friendly pick. Paula's Choice CLEAR Pore Normalizing Acne Cleanser and Dermalogica's Acne Clearing Skin Wash are the two I would compare. innisfree's Volcanic BHA Pore Cleansing Foam and Arencia's Green Tea + LHA Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser add exfoliating acids for oily, congested skin. If you want to keep going, The Best Face Wash for Oily Skin Does Not Strip It is the one I would read next.

Sulfur is the older ingredient, and Kate Somerville's EradiKate 3% Sulfur Daily Foaming Cleanser is the one to try if benzoyl peroxide has been too drying for you. It predates benzoyl peroxide by decades.

Tata Harper's Clarifying Pore & Oil Control Cleanser combines BHA and AHA for redness-prone acne, and Murad's AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser does a similar dual job. Evereden's Teen Oil-Free Balancing Cleanser is made for younger, blemish-prone skin, so it is the one I would hand to a teenager.

A pairing I like: a salicylic cleanser in the morning and a benzoyl peroxide wash at night, but only once each is familiar by itself.

What I would skip: two acid cleansers back to back. The second one rarely gets a chance to help.

Pimple patches and spot treatments

Start with the simplest thing that could work. A patch covers a blemish, keeps your hands off it and asks nothing of the rest of your face.

Starface's Hydro-Star Pimple Patches and Hydro-Star Black Pimple Patches turned the hydrocolloid dot into a small star sticker, and Never Have I Ever's Pimple Patch Gems do the same in a jewel shape. The INKEY List's Hydrocolloid Invisible Pimple Patches and Peace Out's Salicylic Acid & Hydrocolloid Acne Treatment Pimple Patches add salicylic acid to that hydrocolloid base.

When you would rather have a gel, Kate Somerville's EradiKate 10% Sulfur Acne Spot Treatment uses the same sulfur as its cleanser, Murad's Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment is the third option, and Origins' Super Spot Remover comes with salicylic acid. Between them you can find the ingredient your skin tolerates best, one blemish at a time.

A habit worth borrowing: keep one patch and one gel in the drawer, and use the patch when you might touch your face and the gel when you will not.

What I would skip: covering a blemish that has not surfaced yet. Wait until there is something to cover.

How I would use PanOxyl without wrecking a towel

I think the sensible way to use PanOxyl is to start at 4% benzoyl peroxide and move up to 10% only if your skin can take it. The AAD notes that higher concentrations can cause dryness and flaking that make acne worse.

Keep white towels and pillowcases away from it, since benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric, and the myth that it lightens skin is false. Store the wash at room temperature or cooler and replace it every 10 to 12 weeks, following the AAD's guidance. Add one moisturizer and skip the other actives until your skin asks for more. Stiefel began with candles. You can start with one tube and a dark towel.
