Michael Kors Spring 2027: A Mod, Mod World

Michael Kors Spring 2027: A Mod, Mod World

Michael Kors showed a modernist collection in the MoMA Sculpture Garden, with zig-zag hems, Calder and Matisse references and white go-go boots. The accessories did a lot of the talking.

A mod, mod world

You did not need the show notes. The show was in the MoMA Sculpture Garden, and Nico's voice on Sunday Morning came over the speakers, so it was obvious where we were headed. Michael Kors said a trip to Paris for the Calder exhibition, a visit to LACMA and moving into a new house had him thinking modernist.

He also said he is a hot weather baby, and when it gets warm he wants something that pops. I think that honesty is why this works. It is a designer dressing for his own favorite weather.

Michael Kors Spring 2027 runway: the top five data points from every look

Sharp lines, loud color

The references are the ones everyone has been playing since Edie Sedgwick and Nico: Calder sculptures, Matisse cutouts, a graphic canvas by Carmen Herrera. What I like is that he keeps them crisp instead of nostalgic. The cuts are sharp and often asymmetrical, with hems that zig-zag left to right, run shorter in front, or trail streamers from the side seams.

The palette is red, yellow, green and blue against white and black. About a quarter of the looks have one of those asymmetric hems, and I would say it is the detail that makes the show move.

Dresses, skirts and trousers

The ornament is a joke with a straight face

Michael Kors treats ornament like a joke told with a straight face, and the bags are where it shows. The Sofia satchel is covered in hand embroidered feathers, the Angelica clutch and the Kaitlin dome satchel are crocodile embossed, and there is a second Kaitlin in fringed woven leather. The Cate and Thalitha clutches and the slim Anna frame bag keep the line clean, and the hand stitched Roberta, Sophia and Sharon bags are the ones you would carry every day.

From MICHAEL Michael Kors, the Nolita, Bryant and Laila bags come in suede, leopard print calf hair and color blocked leather, the Goldie faux fur clutch and Izzy zebra pochette are the fun ones, and the Jet Set and Henly totes are for travel. I would carry one sculptural bag with a plain outfit and stop there.

Bags

The accessories finish the sentence

I think the accessories are the real composition of this show. Layered leather pendants, bags with metal handles inspired by Marcel Breuer's tubular steel chairs, bug-eye frames, the long scarf that has suddenly become everywhere, and white go-go boots. Nearly a fifth of the looks wear a long pendant, and a fifth wear bold or tinted glasses.

The last grid is the shoes and the finishing pieces: the Anna and Jasmine sandals, the Arianna city boot, the feathered Anna pumps and the Allegra oxford from the collection, then knee high boots, ballet flats, sunglasses, belts and Lexington watches from MICHAEL Michael Kors. If I were copying one idea, it would be a pendant over a plain black knit, and the Leather Card Holder Necklace is the closest thing here.

And if MoMA really does have a Mondrian exhibition on the schedule for 2027, then primary colors are about to look very smart. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Michael Kors Outlet and Michael Todd Beauty.
