Winter coats are having a big season, from Esquire UK's coat guide to leather trenches on Burberry's Autumn/Winter 2026 runway. I looked for pieces that keep you warm and keep your shape, from Barbour and Kaptain Sunshine jackets to Red Wing and Diemme boots. Read on for the order I would buy it all in.

Mens Winter Coats: Warm Pieces That Keep Their Shape
Jackets, Gilets and a Trench Coat
The duffle coat went to sea before it went to the street. The Royal Navy adopted it in the late 19th century, and it picked up the nickname Monty after Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, who wore one through the Second World War. Afterward Gloverall, founded in 1951 by Harold and Freda Morris, took surplus naval stock and sent it into civilian wardrobes. I start there because cold-weather dressing has always been a practical garment that happened to look good. Esquire UK's winter coat guide from November 2025 is titled around cashmere cocoons and parkas 2.0, and its review of Burberry's Autumn/Winter 2026 show says the brand hammered home the message on coats, with latex puddles on the catwalk and leather trenches. The big outer layer is the story of the season, and my only worry is that people bury themselves in it. Shape is what disappears in January. This first grid is the top layer. Kaptain Sunshine was launched in 2013 by Shinsuke Kojima, who says he re-edits clothes from archives 50 to 100 years old, and the black wool blouson looks exactly like that kind of reissue. Barbour's brown Bedale is still made by hand in South Shields, and it is the one I would live in. Wear any of these over a thin knit, never a thick one. What I would skip is the Canada Goose Freestyle Crew gilet if your day is mostly indoors, because down belongs to long waits outside. I went deeper on a related idea in Cold Weather Dressing: What the Outer Layer Has to Do.

Knitwear does the real work of staying warm, and it is where shape is easiest to keep. William Lockie has been making knits in Hawick, Scotland since 1874, and the Thorburn family, descendants of the founder's nephew, still own it. The rib-trimmed cashmere sweater in brown is the quiet one, the sweater you put on without thinking. S.N.S. Herning comes from Denmark, where the Skyt family still knits fishermen's sweaters from an inherited recipe, and its black Robust merino zip-up carries some of that cold-water seriousness. Hartford's Shetland crewneck in brown is the classic collegiate answer, and I like it with a white oxford collar peeking out. For something softer, the Ghiaia Cashmere cotton sweater and the TOTEME camel hair knit are the soft ones, and softness is the whole point. My test is simple: push the sleeves up to the elbow and see whether the cuff stays put. A good knit holds its place. The one I would skip is the KAPITAL oversized intarsia wool sweater under a close-cut overcoat, since it wants room that a fitted coat will not give it.

Cold legs make people lazy, and that is when the silhouette collapses into a baggy mess. Straight-leg is the cure. Auralee was launched in Tokyo in 2015 by Ryota Iwai, who built the label around fabric he develops himself, and the brown wool-gabardine trousers are a good demonstration of why that matters, because wool gabardine is a cloth that tends to keep its line through a long day. Acne Studios began in Stockholm in 1996, and Jonny Johansson made 100 pairs of raw denim with red stitching and gave them away in 1997, which is how the label's denim reputation began. The black straight-leg pair is the one to wear with a big coat. I also like the mfpen corduroy in black and the Drake's peached cotton-twill in green when I want texture without looking dressed up. Graphpaper's blue selvage jean is for people who like denim to age with them. Pair any of these with a boot that has some weight to it. Skip the James Perse linen suit trousers on a January commute: linen is a warm-weather cloth and it will look underdressed against the wind.

Boots, Loafers and Sneakers
Shoes decide whether winter dressing looks planned. Red Wing was founded in 1905 by Charles Beckman in Red Wing, Minnesota, and it is still family owned and based in the same town, which tells you something about how they think about boots. The 8146 Roughneck in black is a work boot you can wear with a wool coat and not feel silly. Diemme comes from Montebelluna, the Veneto town known for mountain and ski boots, where the Signor brothers started it in 1992, and the black Cornaro hiker has that alpine pedigree. Timberland's 6-inch premium boot in dark brown is the version of the boot the company introduced in 1973, and it needs no explanation. Not every day needs a boot, though. VINNY's was started in Copenhagen in 2019 by Virgil Nicholas, who was tired of men wearing sneakers with suits, and the black Yardee loafer is his answer. Wear it with thick socks and a cropped trouser when the pavement is dry. I would skip the off-white norda 001A running sneaker on salted streets, because it will not stay off-white for long.

Caps, Belts, a Scarf and a Weekend Bag
Small things finish a cold-weather outfit, and they are the easiest place to show some personality. Begg x Co traces its roots to 1866, when Alex Begg began making scarves in Paisley, and the green Arran scarf is a brushed cashmere piece that sits close under a coat collar. It is the first accessory I would add. Oasi is the name of the 100 square kilometer natural territory in the Biellese Alps that Ermenegildo Zegna created, and Zegna's brown Oasi cashmere baseball cap carries it; I like it for dry cold. For belts, visvim's braided leather and TOTEME's croc-effect are slim and quiet, while the CELINE Vivienne Triomphe is the one that wants to be seen. The Bleu de Chauffe Voyage weekend bag is made entirely by hand by one craftsperson who signs it, which is a good reason to take it on a winter trip. Keep the belt and the shoes in the same family of brown or black. In a hard freeze I would skip the Saint Laurent green cotton-twill cap, because cotton gives you very little warmth when the wind picks up.

What I take from the duffle coat is that cold-weather clothing was always meant to be used, and good shape came second but stayed. Montgomery did not wear his Monty for style, and yet the shape outlived the war. The same logic runs through this edit. Start with one big layer you love, such as the Barbour Bedale or the Herno shell blazer, and then keep everything under it fitted and thin. Buy knitwear next, because it works hardest every day. Add a straight-leg trouser, then a pair of boots with weight in them, and only after that think about a scarf or a cap. The order matters because the layers you see most are the coat and the shoes. If you wear a long coat, keep the trouser hem clear of the boot so the line stays clean. If you wear a short jacket, a knit with a visible collar fills the gap. Winter does not have to flatten you into one shape. Pick the pieces that hold their own lines and let the weather do the rest.
More Knits, Boots and Trousers for Cold Days
Once the big coat is sorted, the rest of the winter outfit should stay close to the body, and this shelf is full of that kind of piece. Start with knits: the two Mr P. sweaters, the merino wool and the Curtis cashmere, and the Polo Ralph Lauren crewneck with suede elbow patches. Trousers come next, with mfpen's Service pleated wool and its straight-leg pleated wool pair, plus the Zegna straight-leg jeans. For boots I would look at the VINNY's Officer Chelsea and the Polo Ralph Lauren Alpine suede hiking boots, and the Hartford brushed wool-blend felt blouson works as the lighter layer. Finish with the Zegna leather belt. What I would skip: the CELINE suede, leather and shell sneakers on a wet day, because they are better kept for dry pavement.
