Mens Corduroy Pants, Jackets and Shirts for Autumn

Mens Corduroy Pants, Jackets and Shirts for Autumn

Corduroy is the fabric of the season, and this autumn it shows up on jackets, shirts and trousers in every shade of brown. I went through the labels with real histories, from Barbour's South Shields factory to Officine Générale in Paris, and kept the pieces that wear well. Here is how to wear cord without looking like a geography teacher.

Corduroy Jackets, Blousons and Blazers

In Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson's 2009 film, Mr. Fox wears a double-breasted corduroy suit in a warm tan, and Anderson has said he sent his own trousers to the puppet-makers so they could match the cloth. The Guardian said the film put corduroy back in the fashion-magazine spotlight, and seventeen years on the spotlight has come back. Vogue's Fall/Winter 2026 menswear predictions say corduroy will be a core fabric in menswear for 2026, citing Heuritech's forecast of rising visibility on social media. I like that the fabric is a little ridiculous and a little serious at once. Start with the jacket. Barbour has made oilskins since John Barbour began supplying sailors in South Shields in 1894, and its Transport blouson in brown waxed cotton with corduroy trim is the safe way into the trend. Paul Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970, a tiny room of about three by three meters with no windows, and his brown corduroy suit jacket is the grown-up version of Mr. Fox. Rag & Bone's stretch-cotton cord jacket in brown is the casual one. Wear any of them over a gray sweater. What I would skip is the corduroy suit jacket with matching trousers unless you want the Mr. Fox look exactly.

Corduroy Shirts and Overshirts

A corduroy shirt is the easiest way to wear the fabric, because it sits between a flannel and a jacket. Portuguese Flannel is a four-generation family business with mills around Guimarães, and it says it does not follow trends, so the beige Labura overshirt has real credibility. Kardo was founded in 2013 by Rikki Kher with a single sewing machine in a Delhi workshop, and every piece is made start to finish by one artisan whose name is on the wash tag. The navy Ronald shirt is the one I would buy. A.P.C. was created in Paris in 1987 by Jean Touitou, whose first collection was simply called WINTER 87, and the Mateo shirt in brown carries that same minimal logic. Folk's brown Patch overshirt, from a label that has operated since 2002 under Cathal McAteer, sits between streetwear and designer casualwear. Wear any of them open over a white tee, and button one up under a plain knit when it gets cold. What I would skip is the Mr P. cream cashmere-blend corduroy shirt for a dog park or a campfire, because pale colors show every mark.

Straight and Tapered Corduroy Trousers

Corduroy trousers are the real test of the trend, because you will wear them most. Officine Générale was founded in 2012 by Pierre Mahéo in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and he describes its point of view as beautiful normality, so the gray straight-leg corduroy is exactly that. Slowear began in 1951 near Venice with Incotex, a trouser maker founded by Carlo Compagno, and the gray Incotex cord is the one to hand to someone who says they only wear chinos. Beams Plus launched in 1999 to honor the golden era of American menswear, and its brown pleated, tapered pair does Ivy style well. Thom Sweeney was founded by two Savile Row-trained tailors who met in 2003 at Timothy Everest, and its brown corduroy chinos are the tailor's version. Rubinacci's cream Modaluca is lighter and sharper. Dries Van Noten, who started his label in Antwerp in 1989, makes a plain brown pair that works with almost anything. Wear cord with smooth fabrics, like a cotton shirt or a fine knit. What I would skip is the white Canali cord for muddy autumn walks, because pale cord does not forgive a wet field.

Wear It Worn In

What I like about corduroy is that it improves as it gets handled. It does not need to be pristine, and the ridges flatten at the elbows and knees in a way that suits it. The lesson of Mr. Fox's suit is that corduroy looks best when it has a life. If you are building this look from scratch, go in this order: first the trousers, then an overshirt, then the jacket. That makes a full outfit for autumn, and nothing in it needs to match. Keep one piece corduroy and let the others be smooth, such as a wool coat or a cotton tee. Add a second cord piece only if the colors are far apart, like a brown jacket and ecru trousers. Treat the fabric as a texture, not a theme, and it will stay interesting well past this season.

More Corduroy Jackets, Trousers and Shirts

Corduroy is easiest to wear when you let it be the one texture in the outfit, so this shelf gives you more ways to choose which piece that is. For jackets there are four casual ones: the Polo Ralph Lauren cotton-corduroy bomber, the Hartford Danny, the Sunspel blouson and the quilted Polo Ralph Lauren down jacket. If you want it dressier, the Mr P. double-breasted corduroy suit jacket and the Boglioli suit trousers go together. Trousers on their own come from Mr P. in a tapered cut, RRL's Empire, Nili Lotan's Billie and the Stone Island 800. The A.P.C. Basile and Stone Island corduroy shirts finish it off. What I would skip: wearing the Mr P. suit jacket and the Boglioli trousers together on a weekend, because they read as a suit, so split them up. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Corduroy pants.
