Manolo Blahnik Shoes: Suede Ankle Boots and Sandals

Manolo Blahnik Shoes: Suede Ankle Boots and Sandals

Manolo Blahnik treats a shoe as a small piece of theatre, with the line of the heel and the shape of the toe doing the speaking. He founded his eponymous label in Chelsea in 1970 after Diana Vreeland urged him to make shoes, then made his first major runway collection for Ossie Clark in 1971. The collection still carries that sense of movement, from sharp pumps to sandals that seem to know exactly where the evening is going.

Boots with a little theatre

Blahnik set up his label in Chelsea in 1970, and the boots keep the label’s original mix of discipline and fantasy close to the ground. Suede, leather and sculpted heels make them useful enough for a real wardrobe while the details prevent them from becoming anonymous.

Sandals for the entrance

The designer’s early work for Ossie Clark in 1971 put movement at the center of his shoes, and these sandals still feel designed for a room rather than a product photograph. Metallic finishes, ankle ties and precise straps give the foot a clear role in the outfit.

The heel, perfected

Diana Vreeland saw shoe sketches in Blahnik’s set-design portfolio and told him to make shoes, a nudge that shaped modern high-heel language. The pumps and mules show the payoff, with pointed toes, sculptural heels and color that can make a simple dress feel fully considered. The Pirua and Jada mules are the easiest ones to slip on with trousers. The Hangisi, Nadira and Apidosa satin pumps are the evening picks, and the Maysli and Mayslibi slingbacks are the ones I would wear to work.

Flats and loafers with a point of view

The flats and loafers are not a retreat from glamour, only a different kind of control. The Bucky tasseled loafers and Pitaka suede loafers are the ones I would wear with tailoring. Look for pointed shapes, texture and small gestures that keep the shoe expressive even when the heel is low. The Cloudad 10 suede flats and the striped + Emilia Wickstead mules bring a little colour to the low-heel group. I went deeper on a related idea in Black Suede Studio Shoes: Montreal Loafers, Boots and Mules.

Choose the Shoe That Changes Your Posture

Manolo Blahnik is for someone who wants the shoe to have a personality before the outfit has finished introducing itself. The pumps are the signature, but the boots and flats make the brand easier to live with. Choose the silhouette that changes your posture, then make the rest of the look quieter.
