Looking for the Most Comfortable Heels? Start With the Block, Not the Stiletto

Heel comfort used to be treated as a myth, something you traded away for height and shape. The most comfortable heels now come from brands that engineered the footbed and heel geometry for standing time, from cushioned block heels to low St. Agni mules and kitten heels built for a workday.

The pump reinvented around the footbed

For years a comfortable pump meant a lower heel and not much else, which ignored the fact that most foot pain from heels comes from the ball of the foot, not the height. MARGAUX The Ada Pumps is built with a footbed designed to distribute weight away from the forefoot, treating the insole as the real comfort feature rather than the heel height. Donald Pliner's square toe block heel pumps take the geometry route instead, using a wider heel base for stability so the ankle is not working to balance a narrow stiletto point. Between the two, the most comfortable heels split into insole engineering and heel-shape engineering, and it is worth knowing which one is actually bothering you.

The slingback and the leather pump

Sam Edelman Bianka is a slingback kitten heel, trading full coverage for a lower, more stable heel height. Gentle Souls Galleria is a full leather pump with a rounder toe box built for more room across the forefoot.

The slingbacks I added for comfortable heels all keep the heel low and the strap adjustable. Madewell Orasay and Dolce Vita Carel are the easy block-heel pairs, Loeffler Randall Katerina is the sculpted suede one, and Vince Sabra is the kitten in patent.

The occasion pump and the everyday block

Badgley Mischka Ofelia is dressed up for events, with embellishment over comfort features. AGL Didi Nero strips that back to a plain block heel meant for regular wear.

For the days in between, Tony Bianco Maddi and Larroudé Kaitlan are low pumps that stay put, Margaux Sofia is a low kitten block from the same label as the Ada above, and Schutz Paola is a kitten slingback with an easy daily height.

The sandal heel and the ankle strap

Stuart Weitzman Alyssa 85 is an open sandal with a block heel, letting the foot spread rather than confining it. MICHAEL Michael Kors Serena Flex adds an ankle strap for security at a similar heel height.

Comfort across heel shapes

LifeStride, Khaite, Cole Haan, Kate Spade and Naturalizer add block heels, pumps and sandals that stay comfortable. A wider heel base and a padded footbed are what I check first.

I have also folded in two labels that build comfort into the pattern itself. Sarah Flint launched her New York label in 2013, and her Perfect styles are handcrafted in Italy with a wider toe box, 6mm of extra padding, natural arch support and a rubber non-slip sole. The kitten pumps on a 50mm heel and the Round Toe Pump on a 70mm block are the pairs I would pick for a full day of meetings.

St. Agni comes from Byron Bay, where Lara and Matt Fells founded the label in 2014, and the heels follow the same relaxed logic as the clothes. The pairs here sit between 3 and 7 centimetres on soft leather, so the Plié, the Linea and the woven mules feel closer to a flat than a pump. Wear them with a straight trouser or a slip skirt and they look polished without any of the wobble.

The ten-minute fit test

This category has genuinely improved. Footbed engineering and wider heel bases solve real problems that low heels alone never addressed, and a block heel with a good insole can be worn for hours in a way a decade-old stiletto never could. What is oversold is the idea that marketing copy alone can make any heel comfortable all day, since fit still matters more than any cushioning claim. Toe box width and heel-base stability tell me more than the height number, because a narrow toe box can hurt in a two-inch heel just as quickly as in a four-inch one. I try standing in them for ten full minutes in the store, not just walking a few steps. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together What to Wear to a Wedding in Italy and Pink Heels.
