Laura Mercier's makeup begins with an artist's eye for skin

Laura Mercier is a French makeup artist who trained at the Carita aesthetician school and spent six years working in Paris. In the early 1980s, she worked on American Elle model tests before building a New York editorial career with photographers Michael Thompson, Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Meisel. The Cut reports that Meisel introduced her to Madonna.

Laura Mercier Cosmetics launched in 1996, and Mercier's stated aim is makeup that enhances rather than masks the face. She lists Secret Camouflage, Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Tinted Moisturizer among the products she created to help skin look like skin.

Caviar eyes and lip color bring Laura Mercier's artistry into focus

The Caviar range covers eye shadow, liner and mascara, while the lip edit spans refillable lipstick, liner and soft crayon. Together, they make a flexible route from a defined eye to a richer lip for fall and winter.

Mercier told Into The Gloss that her partnership with Madonna lasted eight years and covered videos, press, interviews and awards. I like this edit as a reminder that her working makeup range can move from a close, polished detail to a more expressive finish.

Where I would start with Laura Mercier makeup

I would start with Secret Camouflage and Translucent Loose Setting Powder. Keep the skin visible, then let one detail carry the look. That is the Laura Mercier approach I return to for fall and winter.
