LaPointe Tops: Color, Texture and Occasionwear

LaPointe Tops: Color, Texture and Occasionwear

LaPointe is the downtown New York label Sally LaPointe and Sarah Adelson started in 2010, known for clean shapes with a streak of color and texture. I like clothes that are quiet in cut and loud in finish.

The women behind LaPointe

I have a weakness for clothes that are expressive without looking like a costume, and that balance is exactly where LaPointe lives. Sally LaPointe and her best friend Sarah Adelson started the label in downtown New York in 2010, after studying at RISD together. Sally leads the creative side and Sarah runs operations, and I like that pairing of a strong point of view with the unglamorous work of building a business. The label's own story tells it well.

Before clothing, Sally was drawn to painting and sculpture, and you can still feel that in the way color and texture make the first impression while the shapes stay simple enough to leave the wearer at the center. Lady Gaga wore a dress from the very first New York Fashion Week collection in 2010, which says a lot about how a clean silhouette can carry a vivid presence.

By 2025 the house was marking fifteen years, and Sally asked Oprah Winfrey to be the muse for the Spring collection, choosing a campaign over a conventional runway. I come back to LaPointe for that mix of ease and intent: one sharp cut, a flash of color or a layer of feathers can give the whole outfit its direction.

Tops that let texture lead

Color, drape and surface do the talking across these tops. The Lightweight Georgette High Low Mock Neck Top With Feathers makes texture part of the silhouette, while the Satin Caftan Top and the Satin Cape Tee leave fabric and shape to carry the mood. For something closer to the body, the Mesh Mock Neck Bodysuit is the print-led counterpoint.

In my fashion daydream, she wears the Satin Cape Tee to a late dinner with straight trousers and simple earrings, so its shape has room to register. I would let one feature lead at a time: feathers or sequins with quieter bottoms, a mesh bodysuit grounded by clean tailoring. What I would skip, for a plain everyday layer, are the feathered and cape cuts. Start with the plain satin or mesh instead.

Gowns with a little drama

Evening is where LaPointe gives texture the stage. The Feather Embroidery Sleeveless Halter Ruched Gown and the Jersey Long Sleeve Shirred Hip Gown With Feathers bring different proportions to the feather detail, while the Deep Cowl Neck Shirred Gown keeps all the attention on its neckline. The Satin Halter Gown is the cleaner route into the same polished mood.

Picture her arriving at a winter celebration in the Mesh Sequin Sleeveless Gown With Sash, the surface catching the light of the room and the jewelry kept spare. Before choosing any gown, I would try it with the shoes you plan to wear, then sit, walk and raise your arms to see how the hem and neckline behave. These are for the night you want the dress to do the talking.

A lower half with its own point of view

This group shows how LaPointe carries its interest in texture beyond dresses. The Wide Leg Pant With Feathers is the expressive option, while the Satin Belted Pant and the Lightweight Satin High Waisted Belted Pant make shine feel more grounded. For a softer counterpoint, the Merino Mock Neck Sweater With Patch brings knitwear into the conversation.

I picture her building a look around the Wide Leg Pant With Feathers and a pared-back top, then choosing a low-key shoe so the movement stays the focus. The Mesh Ruched Maxi Skirt is another way to wear texture without adding feathers. A practical note: try any wide leg trouser with your usual shoes first, since the whole line depends on where the hem lands.

A clear point of view, worn your way

I like LaPointe because it allows restraint and spectacle to share a closet. A simple shape becomes memorable through color, satin or feather trim, without asking the wearer to disappear behind the clothes. Start with the piece whose cut feels like you, then decide how much texture you want around it. When one element is already doing plenty, let the rest of the outfit breathe. Although I will admit the feathers usually win me over.
