La Roche-Posay grew out of a French thermal spring town and a pharmacist with a plan, and its plain, low-drama formulas still suit reactive skin. This edit covers the brand's cleansers, moisturizer and serums, then gentle washes from other labels and a set of barrier moisturizers to follow.

La Roche-Posay: A Spring, a Pharmacist and the Calm Shelf I Keep Returning To
La Roche-Posay is a place before it is a brand. A thermal center opened in that French town in 1905, and the home-use products built around its spring water arrived in 1975, when the pharmacist René Levayer founded Laboratoire Dermatologique La Roche-Posay. I like that lineage. It explains why the packaging looks like a pharmacy shelf and why nothing in the range tries to sound glamorous.
The company changed hands in 1989. In 1986, before that, it launched its first sunscreen for sensitive skin, Anthelios Anti-UVA Filter, which tells you where its attention has always been. The brand reached the United States in 1999, sold through dermatologists' offices.
Grid one is the core of what I actually use. Effaclar Medicated Acne Face Wash and Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser sit at two ends of a spectrum: one is the acne face wash, the other a gentle cleanser for a face that is easily upset. Lipikar AP+ MAX Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream is the rich moisturizer for very dry skin. The Effaclar treatment is the leave-on step from the acne line, and I would use it sparingly, while Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum adds water underneath a cream. Vitamin C12 Serum is the morning one.
Introduce a single active at a time, and keep the rest of the routine boring. I usually start the serums at night, twice a week, and only move to daily use once my skin has stopped commenting on them.

Face washes that leave skin comfortable
The cleanser is the step I would change first if my skin were unhappy. Foaming washes that leave you feeling squeaky are the ones I would retire, and this grid is what I would try in their place.
fresh's Soy Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser is the gentle, hydrating one, and the test is whether it leaves a tight feeling. Youth To The People's Superfood Hydrating Gentle Antioxidant Refillable Cleanser is the refillable one, a hydrating cleanser that suits a morning face. First Aid Beauty's Ultra Gentle Pure Skin Cream-to-Foam Face Cleanser starts creamy and turns to a light foam, with colloidal oatmeal and glycerin, which makes it my pick for a winter face.
Origins' Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash is the one to reach for when you want a little lather and nothing harsh. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser is the barrier-hydrating option for dry days, gentle enough at night to follow a makeup remover. Caudalie's Vinopure Pore Purifying Gel Cleanser is the pore purifying gel, and even that should be handled kindly.
A simple test: rinse, pat dry and wait sixty seconds. If your face feels tight, the wash is too strong. If it feels like nothing at all, you have found the right one. I would also keep the water lukewarm and the massage short, since a gentle wash cannot make up for a long, hot shower.

Moisturizers that hold the barrier up
A cleanser only clears the way, and it is easy to forget that the next step matters just as much. The moisturizer is what keeps a reactive face steady through a day of heaters, wind and screens. This grid is a set of barrier creams from different labels, and they behave quite differently, so it helps to know which one you are picking up.
Summer Fridays' Jet Lag Mask + Moisturizer Deep Hydration Treatment with Ceramides doubles as a night mask and a day cream, plush and quick to sink in. Laneige's Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturizer is the hyaluronic cream for moisture barrier support, a lighter feel for skin that is dehydrated more than dry. Drunk Elephant's Lala Retro Nourishing Whipped Refillable Moisturizer with Ceramides is the whipped, nourishing one, and I would save it for winter.
Tower 28 Beauty's SOS Daily Skin Barrier Redness Recovery Moisturizer is made for skin that flushes easily, and I would start there if my face flushes a lot. Alpyn's Super Peptide Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Innbeauty Project's Extreme Cream both pair peptides with barrier support, and they suit people who want their moisturizer to be a little more than a moisturizer.
What I would skip: layering three new creams in one week, or reaching for a heavy barrier cream on top of an active you have only just introduced. If a product stings on the first use, wash it off. Redness that will not settle, or skin that weeps or cracks, belongs in front of a doctor rather than a shelf.

Building around a calm base
What I take from this shelf is that a calm routine is mostly about what you leave out. One gentle wash, one moisturizer that holds up, an SPF in the morning, and a single active when you feel ready for it.
Give each change two or three weeks before you judge it, and change only one thing at a time. Keep a small note of what stings, what soothes and what you would happily repurchase, and write down the date you started each product, because memory is a poor witness. Sunscreen every morning does more for a reactive face than any serum, and the brand has made sunscreen for sensitive skin since 1986, so it is a good place to start. If something persists, ask a doctor. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, My Everyday Reset and La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum.
