Ilse Crawford's home designs begin with human needs

Ilse Crawford is a designer, teacher, creative director and founder of Studioilse. She also founded the Department of Man and Wellbeing at Design Academy Eindhoven and led it for two decades, putting human needs at the center of design.

That practical, human-first lens appears in things as different as her 2015 IKEA Sinnerlig collection and the two Halgatt table lamps launched with IKEA in 2026. Sinnerlig brought cork, ceramic, glass, seagrass and bamboo into 30 pieces of furniture, lighting and tabletop. Halgatt returns to ceramic, linen and brass for everyday light.

Ilse Crawford's plant and textile collections

Her Nurture series with Skultuna began in 2019 with a brass watering can and planters in brass and ceramic. The Wellbeing collection for Nanimarquina was also presented in 2019, with rugs, a hammock, cushions, a throw and a wall tapestry made around natural local fibers, hand spinning, no bleach and no dyes.

Maison&Objet named Crawford its Designer of the Year in 2016, while her studio's portfolio spans homes, hotels, restaurants, schools, offices, furniture and objects. For fall and winter, I would begin with a Wellbeing rug, add the throw, then let a Nurture planter bring a little life to the room.

Where I would start with Ilse Crawford's designs

I would begin with the SINNERLIG Pendant lamp and a Nanimarquina Wellbeing Throw, a combination that brings softer light and tactile warmth to the same room. Leave a little space around them so the shapes and materials can be felt. That is where Crawford's human-centered approach feels most convincing.
