Fall Skirt Outfits Where the Skirt Leads

Fall Skirt Outfits Where the Skirt Leads

Skirts are back to carrying the whole outfit this fall, from satin midis worn with heavy knits to checked wool and pleats. These four looks start with the skirt and build outward, with a sweater, a shoe and a bag chosen to match its mood. The pairings run from loafers and ballet flats to knee boots and a sling pump.

Four Skirts to Build From

I keep coming back to the idea that a good fall outfit starts at the hem and works upward. Fall is the season to let the skirt be the main event, with slippery satin, chunky knits, checks and pleats. Pick one silhouette you will actually reach for, then let it decide everything else.

The four skirts in the grid below cover most of the ground. Alix of Bohemia's Lyra Sunlight silk midi is the pale yellow one, soft and a little buttery, and it moves like water when you walk. Bernadette's checked seersucker maxi is the dry, crinkled counterpoint, light enough to wear into October with a sweater over it. Veronica de Piante's Noelia is a burgundy snake-effect leather midi, the sharpest of the four, and Dries Van Noten's striped pleated twill skirt sits right at the knee for anyone who prefers a shorter line.

A word on Dries Van Noten, since the stripes here are very him. He launched his first collection in 1986 and showed it in London alongside the group that became known as the Antwerp Six, and he has built the house on print, color and unexpected pairings ever since. A pleated stripe feels like the grown-up version of that history.

My test is simple. Stand in front of the mirror in the skirt and one plain sweater, and if you already like what you see, stop adding things. What I would skip: wearing the silk midi and the leather midi with matching heavy tops, because two strong textures fight each other.

Satin Skirt, Chunky Knit

The contrast is the whole point here: something that catches the light against something that looks hand-knit. Violante Nessi's silver satin Shea midi skirt takes Altuzarra's black intarsia wool Coleman sweater without any fuss, because the knit is dense and matte and lets the satin shine on its own.

Khaite's Bella suede knee boots close the gap between hem and shoe. Catherine Holstein founded Khaite in New York in 2016, and the label is known for exactly this kind of quiet, well-made piece, so a beige suede boot that disappears under a midi hem feels right. Liffner's tasseled satin shoulder bag repeats the sheen of the skirt at a smaller scale, which makes the outfit look planned rather than assembled.

Try tucking the sweater's hem loosely into the waistband and see if the satin still falls straight. If it clings, go up a size in the knit rather than changing the skirt.

The Checked Midi

A checked skirt reads as a neutral once you stop treating it as a print. Jean Paul Gaultier's checked wool-blend midi pairs with Nili Lotan's burgundy Josefa Fair Isle cashmere cardigan, and the two patterns get along because they share a color.

Nili Lotan started her label in New York in 2003 with a six-piece capsule of three pairs of trousers, two jackets and a skirt, so a cardigan that behaves like a considered separate suits her. Saint Laurent's Le Loafer Bateau suede loafers keep the look grounded, and the brown suede picks up the warmth in the check. Métier's Vérité City nubuck tote with braided leather trim handles the rest of the day without shouting.

The rule I use: when two patterns meet, one should be large and one small, and one color must appear in both. Squint at the outfit and if the burgundy blurs together, you have it right.

Leather Midi, Silk Blouse

Nour Hammour's black knotted leather midi skirt, the Viret, is tough enough on its own, so the top half should be soft. Loulou de Saison's ivory Gala silk-twill blouse does that job, with a scarf detail at the neck that ties the whole thing together.

Amina Muaddi's burgundy suede Holli Sling pumps add a little height. Muaddi launched her Paris label in 2018 and is known for a flared heel that widens toward the base, which is why even a plain sling feels deliberate. Cult Gaia's yellow marble-effect Eviana clutch is the unexpected finish. Jasmin Larian Hekmat started Cult Gaia making flower crowns and headpieces, and that playful streak is exactly why this clutch keeps the outfit from getting too serious.

If the leather feels stiff, wear it for an hour first and let it settle at the hip before you judge the fit.

Pleats and a Polo

Pleats are the easiest statement skirt to wear day to day, and the trick is a knit polo. TWP's ivory pleated jersey midi skirt and Lisa Yang's cream Katriel cashmere polo make a tonal pair, soft on soft, with just enough structure from the collar.

Aeyde's dark gray leather Betty ballet flats keep the pleats moving freely. Luisa Dames founded Aeyde in Berlin in 2015 and the shoes are made in Italy, with a modernist, pared-back eye that suits a flat like this. Givenchy's black leather belt draws a clear line at the waist, which stops the cream pairing from drifting into pajama territory.

Walk across the room before you commit. Jersey pleats should swing and settle, and if they cling, go a size up.

Skirts that lead the outfit

When the skirt is the loudest thing in the outfit, the fabric does the talking, and this grid is mostly wool, leather and check. Brunello Cucinelli sends two very different ones, a checked alpaca and wool-blend midi and a leather midi, and I would reach for the check first because it works with almost any plain knit.

Givenchy's pleated wool midi and its checked draped wool and mohair miniskirt show the same house at two lengths, one calm and one a little rebellious. Saint Laurent's chalk stripe wool-blend pencil skirt is the office-ready choice, and Dolce&Gabbana's tweed pencil skirt in cotton and linen blend is lighter than it looks. Loewe's belted draped wool midi has a clever waist, while its fringed wool-blend miniskirt is for days when you want some movement.

Gucci's wool and checked wool-blend miniskirts, Balmain's lace slit knit skirt and draped leather midi, and Ramy Brook's Abby wool skirt round out the dressier end. HAIKURE's Ziggy leather skirt and L'AGENCE's Violetta pencil skirt are the sleeker, more everyday options. Rowing Blazers' tartan scarf skirt is the playful one: Jack Carlson, a former rower who wrote a book on rowing blazers, started the brand in 2017, and the skirt keeps that collegiate spirit.

Keep the top plain and let the skirt do the talking. What I would skip: pairing a checked skirt with a striped top, since the grid below already gives you enough pattern to play with.

Let the Skirt Set the Mood

Skirts are the easiest place to make a fall wardrobe feel new, because one change of shape shifts everything around it. The skirt should set the mood, and everything else should follow it rather than compete with it. A shiny skirt wants a matte knit, a busy check wants a solid, and a tough leather wants something soft on top.

For the silky ones, Sablyn's Keri paneled bias silk skirt moves beautifully and needs very little around it. Reformation's McCall silk skirt and Alexa satin skirt are the easy, wearable pair, and I would put either with a chunky sweater and flat boots. LoveShackFancy's Tirelle in espresso is the romantic option, and it makes a dark knit feel less heavy.

A midi that clears the top of a boot is the most useful length for fall, and it works with flats and heels alike. Try the hem against your boots before you leave the house, because a gap of a few inches looks like a mistake and a clean overlap looks intentional.

What I would skip: skirts cut so narrow you have to change how you walk, since they tend to get worn once. Start with the color you already wear most and let the fabric be the new part.
