Devil Wears Prada Outfits: A Cerulean Sweater, Tweed and Tall Boots

These Devil Wears Prada outfits start with cerulean cashmere and run through tweed, knee-high boots, belted coats and structured bags. I would build one look in that order, blue first.

Cerulean, and why it still works

Cerulean, said Miranda Priestly, and a whole generation of us remembered it. In the 2006 film, Meryl Streep's editor tells Andy that her lumpy blue sweater is not just blue, not turquoise, not lapis, but cerulean, a shade that traveled from the runways all the way down to the racks. Streep revived the moment on Colbert in April 2026, and it is still the film's most quoted fashion scene.

That is why Devil Wears Prada outfits start with a sweater for me. The movie, directed by David Frankel from Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel, was dressed by Patricia Field, who had previously dressed Sex and the City. Her read on Andy was blunt: she dressed a little immature at the start. Her read on Miranda was just as clear: a pinch of glamour but no trends. I like that as a rule for a wardrobe. Pick a few strong pieces and skip the noise.

So here is the blue, and I would not go for lumpy. The La Ligne cardigan in cerulean is a cashmere crew neck with a button placket, and it is the closest thing here to the color of the speech. The Lisa Yang Heidi in azure is a ribbed turtleneck with dropped shoulders, and the Seymour is a bright cable-knit crewneck. Tibi's shrunken V-neck cardigan in bright blue is fine-knit, so it slips under a blazer. For softer blues, the Amiya Ursa in baby blue is an oversized funnel neck with ribbed cuffs, and the Lilysilk in periwinkle is cropped and brushed.

My tip: hold the sweater up next to your face in daylight. Cerulean and cobalt, like the Staud Spencer, can look electric or flat depending on your skin, and it is better to know before you commit. Then wear it with a plain gray or black trouser and let the blue do the talking.

Collarless tweed jackets and mini skirts

Tweed is the second chapter of the makeover, so I would treat it as one. Andy's change in the film runs from shapeless mall sweaters and skirts to a sharper wardrobe, and a collarless tweed jacket is the quickest version of that story. The mood is Chanel-adjacent without the label, and the woman I picture on a brisk October morning wears one over a plain white tee and straight jeans.

The ecru ba&sh Meredith has gold-tone buttons and padded shoulders, and the Cinq à Sept Christie in ivory cotton tweed has fringed edges and welt pockets. Isabel Marant's Germina in black and ecru has a scoop neckline, which opens up a fitted shape. If you like a little shine, the Bardot Bennett in soft pink adds sequins to a cropped, collared cut, and Oscar de la Renta's baby blue jacket closes with jeweled buttons and flap pockets. The L'Agence Nyx in midnight and burgundy checks is cropped with snap closures and a collar.

For skirts, the Marc Jacobs mini in powder blue has satin lining and patch pockets with snap hardware, and the IRO Ilire in earthy brown has a raw-cut waist seam and side pleats. I would wear the brown one with the cerulean cashmere above, because blue and chocolate is a good old combination.

Fitting-room test: raise both arms and hug yourself. Tweed that pulls across the back or bunches at the shoulder will annoy you all day, and a lining should not catch on the weave. What I would skip: sequins for a Monday at the office. Save the Bardot for dinner.

Knee-high leather and suede boots

Boots are where the Andy makeover really lands. The AP recap of the film singles out her high-heel, thigh-high Chanel boots, and Field has said Chanel was happy to dress someone young. These are knee-high rather than thigh-high, which is the version most of us can wear to work and out for drinks. I went deeper on a related idea in Black Boots: A Field Guide to Ankles, Tall Pairs and Lace Ups. I went deeper on a related idea in Chanel Boots, From Quilted Combat Shapes to Tall Two-Tone Lines.

The Loeffler Randall Indy is espresso leather with a chunky block heel, a pointed toe and a padded footbed, so it is the most comfortable of the lot. The Stuart Weitzman 5050 Gisele is black lambskin with a stretch back and a low stacked heel, made in Spain. Tory Burch's T Lock riding boot has a strap and gold hardware, and Ulla Johnson's Carlyle has a square toe. The Khaite Andee is crinkled patent on a 40mm heel, the Vince Pace is smooth leather with a round toe, and the Coach Sculpted C is glossy with a zip. For something softer, the Staud Wally in truffle is dark chocolate suede on a slim kitten heel.

October is the month for a short skirt with a tall boot, so I would wear the tweed mini above with any of these. Add opaque tights if it is cold. The Staud suede is the one I would choose with a brown skirt.

Check the shaft before you buy. Measure the widest part of your calf, then compare it to the shaft circumference on the product page, and look at the stretch panel or zip if it has one. What I would skip: a pointed toe on a cobblestone commute, because your ankles will feel it by noon.

Belted trenches and wrap coats

Frankel's trip to the Paris couture shows with Field is where the film's coat-and-bag montages came from. They were one of the main additions to the script, according to Glamour, and the coats are the part I keep coming back to. A belted coat does the same trick as a tailored jacket: it makes a plain outfit look planned.

The trenches first. The Attico trench in beige is double-breasted cotton with a self belt and epaulettes, and the Hobbs London Aria in olive has a buckled belt. Eaves' Keldan in dark khaki is oversized, with a funnel collar and wide sleeves, and Nour Hammour's Tamara is long black leather with notched lapels. Then the wraps. The Tahari Marilyn and Rails Celeste are both camel with big shawl collars and tie belts, Simkhai's Allura is a reversible taupe wool wrap, and the Avec Les Filles coat in pebble gray is slouchy and long.

I would layer a coat with the cerulean sweater underneath: camel and blue is one of the easiest mixes in this edit.

Test: put the coat on over your thickest sweater, then cross your arms. If it pulls across the back, size up or pick the wrap style, which has more give. Tie the belt, then undo it, and see if you like it both ways. What I would skip: an oversized shawl collar if you carry a backpack, since it will bunch under the straps.

Top-handle bags and gold chokers

The bag is the last piece. Molly Rogers, who worked under Field on the first film and designed the sequel's costumes, had one rule for her team, according to Vogue: no pigeon handbags. I think that is a good test for a shopping list, too. If a bag looks like a lump, leave it.

These are all structured. The Hunting Season small top handle in camel nappa is a fold-over trapezoid. Coach's Metropolitan 24 in amber brown has gold-tone hardware, a turn-lock flap and an optional adjustable strap. The Ferragamo Double Gancino is black pebbled leather with the gold clasp, and the Maison de Sabré Large Palais is a taupe tote with rolled handles. They each carry a coat and a sweater without losing shape.

Then the neck. Weekend Max Mara's chain choker is chunky gold curb with pearl-tipped horn details, and Brinker + Eliza's End Game is a dense link with a toggle clasp. The Ralph Lauren collar is three layered gold-tone chains at 16 inches, and Lele Sadoughi's Baroque collar is indigo beads with a gold-plated finish and a lobster clasp. I would wear one statement piece over tailoring, as Field did with Miranda, and leave it at one.

Test: swing the bag on your forearm and walk across the room. A top handle should sit still. Check that a choker closes without catching your hair. What I would skip: a gold collar with a turtleneck, because the two fight each other.

Cerulean first, then the rest

I would begin with the blue, because that is where the speech starts. One cerulean sweater, one coat over it, and I am already most of the way to a Devil Wears Prada outfit.

After that, I would add a tweed piece and a boot, then the bag. Wear the pieces in that order and the story fills in by itself. The sequel opened in May 2026, twenty years after the first film, with Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt back, and Rogers leaned on menswear tailoring for Andy.

So the last step is yours. Leave off one thing before you walk out the door, as Miranda would, and let the sweater be the loud part.
