Bond-Eye

Bond-Eye founder Steve Philpott says the name came to him on a Sydney ferry in 2004, inspired by Bondi Beach, and the first collection followed in 2005 after his years designing activewear. The label is known for its Authentic Crinkle fabric, knitted in Europe and handcrafted into swimwear in Australia, made to stretch four ways so one size fits from XS to L. This edit gathers the crinkle one pieces and bikinis along with the knit dresses, skirts and tops that take the look off the sand.

Collage of swimwear on sunlit beaches and by the water, in the spirit of Bond-Eye

Crinkle one pieces

The first time you touch Bond-Eye you understand the brand. The Authentic Crinkle fabric is textured, stretchy and forgiving, and the one pieces in this grid lean into it with scoop backs, ring details, zebra prints and a cut out style. Because the suits are unsized and stretch four ways, the brand says one size fits XS through L, which makes them easy to buy online. A scoop one piece with a linen skirt is my go to beach lunch outfit.

Bikini tops and briefs

Balconettes, triangles, crop tops and bandeaus up top, with high cut, tie side and reversible briefs below. Many of the reversible styles give you two colors in one, which is the smartest packing trick I know. What I would skip is mixing two crinkle textures in clashing colors; pick one tone family and let the fabric do the work. The brand says most of the range is made from regenerated nylon.

Knit dresses and beach separates

The ready to wear side shares the same texture. Mesh and knit maxi dresses, mini dresses, a layered wrap skirt, tanks and a long sleeve crop top are made to pull over a wet suit and walk to dinner. Steve Philpott studied biology and once wanted to be a marine biologist, and these pieces feel designed by someone who actually spends his days at the beach.

How I would wear it

Start with one crinkle one piece in a color you love, then add a matching knit dress. Bond-Eye has been making Sydney beachwear for two decades, and it works best when the whole look feels effortless.
