This boat neck top edit covers tees, Breton stripes, sweaters, bodysuits and dressy styles with a wide collarbone neckline. I would wear them from a French Navy deck to a holiday dinner.

Boat Neck Top: The Sailor Neckline That Became Sabrina's
Why the boat neck still works
The boat neckline began on a ship's deck. In 1858 the French Navy made a white pullover with indigo horizontal stripes its official uniform, and that shirt came with three-quarter sleeves and a boat neckline, cut wide so it could be pulled off quickly. Sailors needed a neck that got out of the way. Today I just want a top that does the same for me.
A good boat neck top runs horizontally, front and back, nearly to the shoulder points, and sits across the collarbone. It is also called a bateau neck. Film fans know it as the Sabrina neckline, because after the 1954 film the shape took her name and was copied all through the mid 1950s. Before that it was simply boat or bateau. I like that a neckline this plain has had two careers.
Picture her in October, crossing the street with a coffee, a good coat open over a long sleeve that skims her collarbones. That is where these live. The Long Sleeve Boatneck Top from Eterne in cream is soft and shallow, the kind of neckline that makes bare collarbones the whole accessory. The Boatneck Long Sleeve Tee from Aya Muse in gray is the easy layering piece, and the 100% cotton three-quarter sleeve top from Abercrombie & Fitch in black is the one I would wear with a bracelet stack and nothing else.
For something warmer, the Mango long-sleeved tee in chocolate is the rich brown that suits denim and a camel coat. The Marbella shirt from Cotton Citizen in vintage butter brings a washed, sunny color to a gray day. The SKIMS sheer modal top in onyx is a fitted base layer, and the Leset pointelle top in white is delicate enough to wear alone. Practical tip: lift your arms in the fitting room. A true boat neck should stay put on the shoulders and not creep backward.

Breton stripes and the sailor shirt
The striped shirt came from Brittany, where thick wool was knitted to protect fishermen from wind and weather, before it became that navy uniform. Coco Chanel, who had a boutique in Deauville, took the sailors' stripes into fashion in 1917. So when you buy a striped boat neck, you are buying a very old idea with a very good record. I went deeper on a related idea in L.L.Bean Tote: The Ice Carrier That Became the Maine Boat and Tote.
The Galathee II from Saint James is the original in navy and white, with three-quarter sleeves, and I would start the conversation there. The Phare in light blue and white is the half-sleeve cotton version, lighter and better for a warm afternoon. The long-sleeve Mariner tee from Abercrombie & Fitch in blue and ecru is the one for layering under a denim jacket. Mango's striped tee in brown is heavyweight cotton with a boat neck and shoulder buttons, so it feels more like a small design decision than a plain tee.
For a polished version, the rag & bone Essential Rib Stripe Bateau Tee has a ribbed, slimmer fit that holds under a blazer. La Ligne's long sleeve Breton in ivory and black is the Paris-in-a-bag option with a clean bateau neck. EB Denim's Douglas in navy and moss softens the formula.
Pair any of them with dark jeans and loafers, or a pleated skirt and tights now that it is cool. Check in the fitting room that the stripes run level across the chest and the neckline lies flat.
What I would skip: stripes that are so thin and busy they blur when you move. A boat neck already draws the eye across the shoulders, so you want stripes with some room to breathe.

Boat neck sweaters, wool to cashmere
A boat neck sweater has one job in cold weather: keep the warmth in and the neck clear. That wide opening also means you can wear a collared shirt or a thin turtleneck beneath without any bulk at the throat. I think that is the sneaky advantage over a crew neck.
The Haley in heathered navy is a wool blend with a cozy fit, and I would wear it with straight jeans and boots. The Eloisa dolman in aqua has relaxed sleeves and a soft neckline, and it works over a slip skirt. Quince has two pieces here: the fisherman sweater in deep brick red, which is chunky organic cotton, and the Mongolian cashmere in heather charcoal. The fisherman is the one for weekends away, and the charcoal cashmere is the one for a desk.
SRG's Sarriah in oatmeal is cashmere with a wide, relaxed neckline, the kind I would pair with a long pleated skirt. Tularosa's open stitch Zaylee in tan and the Enza Costa linen bateau in pebble are airy, for layering more than bundling. Line & Dot's Jess in ivory is the slim, shallow neckline for anyone who likes a clean line under a trench.
Test every knit the same way. Stretch the neckline gently with two fingers and see if it springs back, then check that the sleeve seam sits near the shoulder point. On cashmere, rub a small patch with your thumb and look for early pilling.
What I would skip: a very loose, wide neck if you plan to wear a bra with straps, since they will show. Go for a slimmer opening, or choose a strapless bra.

Boat neck bodysuits for tucking and layering
The usual complaint about bodysuits is that they feel like a costume. A boat neck changes that, because the neckline is wide and quiet, so the whole thing reads as a plain top that happens to stay tucked. Bonus, there is nothing to ride up under a high-waisted skirt.
The Rian from EAVES comes sleeveless in mocha and in black, with a high boat neckline. I would wear the mocha with wide trousers and the black under a blazer. Beyond Yoga's Serene in dusk brown is long-sleeved and soft, the one for a travel day. NBD's Meher in black has a wide neckline and a sleek fit, and it disappears under a knit vest. Palmatic Studio's Pro Evolution in royal blue is the loud one, and the color does all the talking, so I would keep the rest of the outfit simple.
For evenings, superdown's Minerva in black is sheer with lace detail, and the Opaline from Runaway The Label is a black lace bodysuit with short sleeves. Good American's open back bodysuit in white has cap sleeves and a boat neckline, with a back that is fun to leave under a long coat.
Check the torso length before anything else. Stand up, sit down, and reach overhead, and the snaps should not pull. Keep the neckline in mind too: the boat neck sits wide, so a standard bra strap will show. A convertible bra can reposition to racerback or halter, and it usually comes off entirely for strapless looks.
What I would skip: a lace bodysuit under a thick knit, where the lace just gets lost.

Dressy boat necks for evenings and holidays
The boat neck made its biggest cultural splash on a dress. In 1953 Audrey Hepburn picked pieces from Hubert de Givenchy's racks for Sabrina, including a black silk cocktail dress with bows at the shoulders. Credit for the film's costumes is contested, but the gown is roundly agreed to be Givenchy's. I like that evening boat necks have always been about the shoulders.
Picture her at a holiday party, in a top that needs only trousers and a little gold. The LaPointe satin caftan top in royal blue has draped sleeves and a wide neckline, so I would wear it with slim black pants. Vince has two black tops here. The Drape top has a ruched side, and the Draped Shoulder top is sleeker for evenings. AQUA's lace trim satin top in ivory has lace-trimmed sleeves and works with a satin skirt for a dinner. For texture, Emporio Armani's stretch chenille jersey in black is plush with long sleeves.
Majestic Filatures' three-quarter sleeve top in gold is the shimmery one, easy with jeans on a night out. WeWoreWhat's ruffle top in sky is a lighter, daytime dressy choice. Maeve's structured puff sleeve top in ivory has a nipped waist and sculpted sleeves, and it pairs well with a full skirt.
Hold satin up to a window before buying. If you can see through it, you will want a slip beneath. Run a hand over the chenille too: the pile should lie evenly and not shed on your fingers. Wear it with drop earrings or none. The neckline is the statement.
What I would skip: a heavy necklace. A boat neck sits across the collarbone, so a chain just crowds it.
Start with the closet you have
I would begin with the wardrobe I already have. If the closet is mostly denim and trousers, a black long sleeve or a Breton stripe covers the most days. If cold mornings are the issue, I would go for one of the boat neck sweaters and wear it with a skirt.
Then I would check three things in the fitting room: the neckline stays on the shoulders, the sleeve length works with a coat, and you have a plan for the bra. Strapless is the easy answer, and a convertible bra solves it too.
A sailor needed a neck that came off in a hurry. I would like mine to stay exactly where I put it, preferably with a very good striped sleeve.
