Birkin-ifying

Birkin-ifying

Bag charms, fruit fobs, tassels and beads for decorating your purse until it looks like yours. A guide for anyone who wants a plain leather bag to feel a little more lived in.

Birkin-ifying a bag is really just permission to stop treating it like a museum piece. I like to start with one anchor charm and then keep adding until the bag looks lived in. A Maison de Sabré fruit charm, like the orange or the cherry, is the cheerful center, and a Clare V. tassel or Le Cheval fob in gold adds a little polish next to it.

From there I get silly on purpose. A Madewell crochet fish, a woven tomato and a paracord fish all hang well together because the textures differ but the colors stay loud. Coach's apple and Tory Burch's strawberry are the ones I reach for when the bag itself is plain leather. BaubleBar's evil eye charm is my pick for a bag that needs luck more than another color.

Hang the heaviest piece closest to the handle and let the lighter ones swing below it.
