Bioderma Cleansing Oil, From the Brand That Invented Micellar Water

Bioderma cleansing oil brings the brand's micellar know-how to an oil that melts makeup and rinses clean. Here it is with the cleansing oils I would compare it with, from Clinique and Shiseido to Korean and Japanese formulas.

Jean-Noël Thorel, a pharmacist and biologist, started what became Bioderma in May 1977 in the back of a warehouse in Rungis, near Paris, and the first Bioderma products and its research center came the same year. In 1995 the brand says it invented micellar water with Sensibio H2O, developed for dermatologists and quickly adopted by makeup artists. The Bioderma cleansing oil takes that Sensibio line into an oil, the first step of a double cleansing routine that melts sunscreen and makeup before your regular wash. Thorel later handed control of the parent company to a foundation he set up. Next to it, Clinique's Take The Day Off oil dissolves stubborn makeup, from the brand that launched at Saks in 1968. Shiseido, which began as Japan's first Western-style pharmacy in Ginza in 1872, makes a grape seed cleansing oil for waterproof makeup, and Sulwhasoo, whose story starts with camellia oil sold in Kaesong in 1932, makes a gentle oil that does not dry. Massage onto dry skin with dry hands, then add water to turn it milky before rinsing.

Oils with a story

Josie Maran found argan oil on a modeling trip and paid for her launch herself in 2007 after investors passed; her melt-away oil is built on the same argan, harvested by women's cooperatives in Morocco. Caudalie's Vinoclean oil comes from the Bordeaux vineyard where Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas started the brand in 1995. Allison McNamara named Mara for the Gaelic word for sea and went through 21 revisions of the algae enzyme oil before launching it in January 2020. Dieux, co-founded by Charlotte Palermino with the cosmetic chemist Joyce de Lemos, calls itself clinically vetted, and Ethereal is its concentrated oil for full, waterproof makeup.

Tokyo, Seoul and Paris, and the skip

Damdam was founded in Tokyo in 2019 by Giselle Go and Philippe Terrien, and its Silk Rice oil is inspired by the Japanese ritual of cleansing with rice water, made with rice bran oil by a maker with over a century of experience. Hanyul, from Amorepacific, makes an artemisia cleansing oil for soothing, and Beauty of Joseon draws its ingredients from a Joseon-era encyclopedia written by a female scholar; its ginseng oil uses micellar technology. Dior's L'Huile Off/On removes every kind of makeup. What I would skip is rubbing an oil around your eyes and then opening them in the shower. Rinse with your eyes closed, and emulsify fully so no film is left behind.

How to double cleanse

Use about two pumps on dry skin and massage for a minute. Add a splash of water until the oil turns milky, then rinse. Follow with a gentle gel or foam. On nights without makeup or sunscreen, skip the oil and use just the second step. Keep the bottle off the shower floor, since oily footprints are slippery.
