Cold weather base layers for men, from merino and brushed thermal tops to socks, gloves and a headband. A winter running and commuting kit that layers under anything.

Base Layer
A good base layer is the piece nobody sees and everybody feels. I want something snug but not tight, in merino or a brushed thermal knit, that sits against the skin and keeps a run or a cold commute comfortable. The Eddie Bauer thermal henley and the Brixton long sleeve thermal in off white are easy to wear alone on a mild day, and the Gymshark Element baselayer works under a jacket when you are moving. I went deeper on a related idea in Base Layer Tanks. I went deeper on a related idea in Ski Outfit: Dressing for the Mountain, From Shell to Base Layer.
Then I think about everything that finishes the system. Smartwool's merino glove and reversible headband tuck into any pocket, and Unbound Merino socks keep your feet dry when the temperature drops. When I want a warmer layer on top I go for the Alex Mill merino rollneck or the McTavish knit, and Barbour and Polo Ralph Lauren gloves for the walk to the train. Stay with a neutral palette so everything layers together.
