Barn Jacket Edit: Chore Coats, Waxed Cotton and Quilted Layers

The barn jacket is the practical outer layer that never looks like it is trying too hard. This edit covers true barn and chore jackets as well as waxed, quilted and field styles. Each one is built for repeat wear from September onward.

The barn jacket, explained

A barn jacket is a boxy, collared jacket with roomy pockets, usually in canvas, corduroy or waxed cotton. It started as work wear and now sits in the middle of everyone's fall closet. This edit starts with the true barn and chore jackets, then moves into waxed, quilted and field styles.

Chore coats and corduroy collars

The chore cut is slightly shorter and a little more structured. It layers easily over a hoodie or a tee.

Field and utility jackets

Field and utility jackets bring pockets and a cinched waist to the same idea. They work well with wide trousers.

Shackets

Shackets are the softer cousin of the barn jacket. They are easy to throw on over a tee.

Quilted and lined jackets

Quilted and flannel-lined styles add warmth without much bulk, which is why they pair well with a scarf and boots. Keep the rest of the outfit simple.

Waxed cotton and canvas

Waxed cotton is the original barn jacket fabric, and it gets better as it creases. Plain canvas and cotton keep the look low-key and go with practically everything.

Waxed, quilted and cropped barn styles

This last group mixes waxed swing jackets, quilted layers and cropped barn styles with corduroy collars. They are the easiest place to find a colour or print beyond olive and tan.

Styling a barn jacket

Pair it with a fine knit and straight denim for an easy daytime look. For a dressier mix, wear it over a midi skirt and loafers. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Barbour Jacket and Barbour Jacket Dupe.
