A Baby Foot peel sheds dead skin over a week or two, while a hydrating foot mask bootie works in minutes. Here is what I would expect from each, as someone who had never tried one.

Baby Foot Peel and Foot Masks: What to Expect the First Time
Confessions of a First-Timer
I have never worn a foot mask. I assumed the videos of feet shedding were a bit. Apparently it is a real thing, with a real history. Baby Foot says it was created in 1997 in Tokyo, calls itself the original foot peel, and got its current name in 2005 because the result was feet as soft as a baby's.
So here is what I learned. A foot mask is really two products. The first kind is a peel. You soak your feet, wear plastic booties filled with an acid gel for about an hour, rinse, and then nothing happens for days. According to a dermatologist quoted by KBZK, Dr. Rosana Paul, the AHAs and BHAs loosen the bonds that hold dead cells together, and the skin sheds later. The second kind is a moisturizing mask, a bootie or sock you wear for minutes or overnight. It never peels. It just softens.
The first grid is peels. The second is the moisturizing masks. Read the box, because the wrong one is how people get disappointed.
Peels come with cautions. The cautions I read say to skip them if you have diabetes, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have open sores, eczema, psoriasis or athlete's foot, or very sensitive skin. If any of that is you, ask a doctor first.
Here is a trick I like: count back two weeks from the day you want to show your feet, and start there.
Foot Peels and Peel Sets
The peel I would try first, being a beginner, is the one everyone has heard of. Baby Foot's Original Exfoliation Foot Peel uses fruit acids and natural extracts. You wear the booties for one hour and wash the gel off with soap and water. The brand says peeling begins in 5 to 7 days. An NBC Select tester saw flaking on day 4, full peeling by day 5, and very smooth feet by about day 8 to 13. The results lasted 2 to 3 weeks.
Patchology's PoshPeel Pedi Cure comes with a blend of glycolic, salicylic, lactic and citric acids. Elle calls it a potent choice for thick calluses. It is slower to start. The brand says peeling begins around day 7 or 8, and the shedding can last one to four weeks.
TONYMOLY's Changing U Magic Foot Peeling Shoes come in a version for the heels only, made with the same formula as its top-selling foot peeling shoes. That is a good idea if the rest of your foot is fine.
Patchology's Mistletoes is a four-pack that pairs the PoshPeel treatments with a moisturizing Rosé Toes mask. It comes with its own follow-up mask, so it is the one I would give as a gift.
Here is what people say they wish they had known: wear socks, expect flakes on the floor, do not pick at the skin, and take off nail polish first. Wear sunscreen on the new skin.
What I would skip: a peel if you have any cut or sore on your feet, and a moisturizer during the peeling window. Baby Foot says its moisturizing mask should wait until the peel is done.

If a peel is a project, these are an evening. SEPHORA COLLECTION has two. The Nourishing Foot Mask in Coconut and Lavender is a pair of gel booties enriched with plant extracts, made for 20 minutes. The Nourishing & Repairing Foot Mask is a limited edition, with 95 percent naturally derived ingredients and coconut extract, also for 20 minutes. Patchology's Rosé Toes is lined with resveratrol, strawberry oil and shea butter, and smells like sparkling wine. The brand says ten minutes will do.
The Crème Shop sells sock-like masks in packs of three. One is soothing, with lavender and coconut oil, meant for tired feet and swelling. The other is a moisture repair mask with almond oil and shea butter, aimed at cracked heels and scaly soles. TONYMOLY's Squishmallows Evita mask is a cute bootie with lavender and peppermint to cool, and shea butter, aloe and ceramide to soften. Baby Foot's Moisturizing Foot Mask is a non-peel treatment with collagen and hyaluronic acid, on for 15 minutes. It is meant for aftercare.
PAUME's Overnight Hand & Foot Hydration Mask is the richest, a balm with shea butter, glycerin, panthenol and squalane, unscented, and it works on hands too. A Marie Claire editor says it is very thick and that it cured cracked heels when worn overnight under socks.
Here is a pairing I like: any of the quick masks after a bath, then a pair of cotton socks to keep everything in.
What I would skip: expecting a moisturizing mask to remove calluses. It hydrates. If you want skin to come off, that is the first grid.

Softer Feet, Slower Than You Would Think
I think I will try a hydrating mask first, and a peel only after I have cleared two weeks in my calendar. That seems the honest order. Most of what I read says peels work for most people, but slowly and messily, and a few people see nothing at all.
If your heels are very dry, PAUME overnight looks like the one to try. If you have healthy feet and patience, Baby Foot's peel is the classic. If you have sensitive skin, or any of the medical flags above, stick to a gentle mask.
