AMUR Dresses: Occasionwear with a Lighter Footprint

AMUR Dresses: Occasionwear with a Lighter Footprint

AMUR is a New York label whose name stands for A Mindful Use of Resources, making occasion dresses in bold color and print. I like that it asks what a dress is made of before the party, and this edit is the gowns and tops I would book an invitation for.

A more expressive idea of responsible dressing

I have a complicated relationship with the word sustainable in fashion, mostly because it usually arrives on a plain gray tee. AMUR went the other way. Sofia Shannon, a former design director who had worked at Ronny Kobo and Cynthia Rowley, and Brenna Simmons, who was growing more interested in ethical sourcing, started it in New York in 2017 to give responsible fashion a more expressive wardrobe, with one-of-a-kind going-out pieces at the center.

The name means A Mindful Use of Resources. A silhouette here can be romantic, graphic or bright, but the material is part of the conversation, with natural, cellulosic and reclaimed or recycled fibers all in the mix. I like that this makes the clothes feel more specific than a slogan. A gown is there for a real invitation, and what earns my attention is the print, the movement and the construction, not a promise of being perfect.

Dresses with a real occasion in mind

AMUR's dress range is not one kind of occasion. The Belle Dress is a navy note, while the Elani Pleated Gown and Dalia Pleated Baby Doll Dress take pleats into a long evening shape and a shorter one. The Alaia Day Dress feels right for an event that begins before dark. The Alaina Butterfly Gown, Marisol Cowl Neck Gown and Carolynn Maxi Dress are for a room where a little drama is welcome.

The Delyth Strapless Dress and Nova Pleated Mini Dress pull toward cleaner, shorter shapes, and the Evelyn Layered Dress adds movement through the way it is built. Picture her arriving at a garden dinner in the Alaia Day Dress, jewelry kept simple so the silhouette has room to speak. I would pick the invitation before the dress, then check that the neckline and length let me sit, walk and dance. A dress for one night should still be convincing once the evening starts.

Tops that change the texture

AMUR's tops bring the material story into pieces that can work outside a full gown. The Carmen Denim Top has a firmer line, the Kellen Chiffon Top is the airy contrast and the Augusta Bustier Peplum Top has a defined shape for dinner. The Emery Cable Knit Top is my cooler-weather companion, and not an afterthought.

Picture her switching from denim to chiffon with the same trousers, the change in texture doing most of the styling. Because these are cut so differently, I would make sure the straps, cups or seams sit comfortably through a whole meal. What I would skip is any top that asks for more upkeep than the rest of my closet can support.

A note on dressing with intention

What I keep from AMUR is the insistence that a special dress can be expressive without treating materials as an afterthought. I do not think every purchase has to become a virtue. I want a print, a pleat or a silhouette I will reach for again, and an honest sense of the care it asks of me. I would choose the piece with a real date in my calendar and see whether it still feels like me a month later. Although I suspect the pleats will win.
