An acne safe moisturizer is one the brand labels non-comedogenic. I compare gels, barrier creams and light SPF, and quote what each brand says.

Acne Safe Moisturizer: Gels and Barrier Creams Compared
The best moisturizer for acne prone skin, picked by need
For acne prone skin I start with an oil free gel the brand labels non-comedogenic, add a barrier cream for treatment days and keep the sunscreen light. Here is where I would go, by what your skin needs.
Best overall gel: SOFIE PAVITT FACE Skin Jelly. Oil free and non-comedogenic, with beta-glucan, allantoin and zinc and copper PCA.
Best for oily skin and pores: Paula's Choice CLEAR Oil-Free Moisturizer. Niacinamide and a triple-ceramide blend in a lightweight gel.
Best with salicylic acid built in: TULA Breakout Star Acne Moisturizer. 2% salicylic acid plus niacinamide and azelaic acid, oil free and non-comedogenic.
Best barrier cream for treatment days: AESTURA ATOBARRIER365 Cooling Hydro Soothing Water Cream. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid, non-comedogenic and fragrance free per Sephora.
Best for redness: Tower 28 SOS Daily Skin Barrier Moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid, ceramides and allantoin, fragrance free and non-comedogenic.
Best for dry patches: innisfree Green Tea Ceramide Cream. Seven ceramides and colloidal oatmeal, and Sephora lists it as non-comedogenic and fragrance free.
Best daily SPF: Beauty of Joseon Day Dew Sunscreen SPF 50. Water resistant, with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and labeled non-comedogenic.
What makes a moisturizer acne safe
An acne safe moisturizer is one the brand says is oil free or non-comedogenic, and ideally the retailer page says it too. I start with a gel like Sofie Pavitt Skin Jelly, add a barrier cream for treatment days and a light sunscreen on top. A label is a hint, not a promise, so I patch test first.
The idea that a moisturizer could cause breakouts has a real date attached to it. In 1972, dermatologists Albert Kligman and Otto Mills described what they called acne cosmetica, and the rabbit ear test was soon used to grade how likely an ingredient was to plug a pore. Researchers have argued about that test ever since, but it is the reason the phrase non comedogenic now sits on so many labels. I treat the phrase as a hint, then read the rest of the page.
For the best moisturizer for acne prone skin, I start with gels and water creams. SOFIE PAVITT FACE Skin Jelly is my lead pick. Sofie Pavitt's oil free gel is labeled non-comedogenic and acne-safe, with beta-glucan, allantoin and zinc and copper PCA, and it sits fine under makeup. Paula's Choice CLEAR adds niacinamide and a ceramide blend, and Glow Recipe Watermelon Pink Juice brings hyaluronic acid. Tatcha The Water Cream and The INKEY List Omega Water Cream are light and oil free, and Farmacy Daily Greens is an oil free gel with moringa and papaya. If you want more texture options, there are gentler gel creams in my Bubble guide. Kiehl's Ultra Facial gel cream is shine-free and labeled non-comedogenic, and CLINIQUE Dramatically Different gel comes in a pump. I went deeper on a related idea in Vanicream Moisturizer and Other Gentle Creams for Reactive Skin.
A quick test: put a pea of the gel on one cheek for a few days before it goes on your whole face.

Beauty of Joseon Day Dew Sunscreen SPF 50. SPF. Sephora lists it as non-comedogenic; the brand still suggests a patch test for acne-prone skin. Best for daily, under makeup. 4.0 stars from 602 Sephora reviews.

A 28-day test for an acne-safe moisturizer
Breakouts take weeks to show up, so the moisturizer test I would run for acne-prone skin covers a full skin cycle, about 28 days per product.
The setup. One moisturizer at a time for 28 days, with the same cleanser, the same treatment and the same sunscreen. Nothing else new goes on the face during the test.
What I would measure. New breakouts, counted once a week on the same day and in the same light. Shine at 3 p.m., scored on a 0 to 3 blotting-paper scale (0 is a clean sheet, 3 is a soaked one). Pilling under sunscreen, yes or no, every morning. Tightness two hours after applying, 0 to 3.
How I would read it. I would expect a gel like SOFIE PAVITT FACE Skin Jelly to score low on shine, while a richer cream like innisfree Green Tea Ceramide is for dry patches, so tightness is its number. TULA Breakout Star has 2% salicylic acid built in, so if you already use a salicylic treatment, test it on the days you skip that step.
What I would skip. Switching products after a week. Week one tells you almost nothing about breakouts.
Acne Safe Barrier Creams, Answered
What is an acne safe moisturizer? It is a moisturizer the brand says will not clog pores, usually with an oil-free or non-comedogenic claim. Sephora lists SOFIE PAVITT FACE Skin Jelly as a non-comedogenic, acne-safe gel moisturizer. Those are brand claims, so check with your dermatologist if you are on a prescription.
Is there an acne safe barrier cream? Brands that say so include AESTURA, whose Cooling Hydro Soothing Water Cream Sephora lists as non-comedogenic, and Tower 28, whose SOS cream is called non-comedogenic and fragrance-free. make p:rem names its Inteca cream for sensitive, acne-prone skin. I would still try one on a cheek first.
Which barrier repair cream is made for acne prone skin? make p:rem Inteca Advanced CICA Soothing Cream is named for sensitive and acne-prone skin, and Sephora calls it fragrance free. banu Deep Drench is also made for acne-prone skin, and Sephora says it is non-comedogenic. Use either after a treatment has dried.
What is the best gel moisturizer for acne prone skin? My lead pick is SOFIE PAVITT FACE Skin Jelly, an oil-free gel the brand calls non-pore-clogging. Paula's Choice CLEAR is a gel-cream that Sephora says is made for acne-prone skin. Which one wins depends on how shiny you are by noon.
Barrier creams for treatment days
Acne treatments can leave skin tight, so a barrier cream earns a spot on the shelf. I am not a doctor, so check with yours about what to use alongside a prescription. What I can tell you is what the brands say. AESTURA ATOBARRIER365 Cream is a rich, dermatologist-tested, non-comedogenic cream with ceramides, and the Cooling Hydro Soothing Water Cream from the same line is the lighter option for oily skin. Tower 28 SOS Daily Skin Barrier Moisturizer is fragrance free and intentionally basic, made with hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Skin Barrier Moisturizing Cream puts ceramides front and center, as the name says. innisfree Green Tea Ceramide Cream is called non-acnegenic by the brand, with seven ceramides and colloidal oatmeal. Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair is a fragrance free cream endorsed by the National Eczema Association, and ALPYN Super Peptide Barrier Repair has a five-ceramide complex. Summer Fridays Jet Lag is a mask and moisturizer in one. If you want to keep going, Ceramide Cream for Eczema: Oat and Barrier Creams I Trust is the one I would read next.
How to use it: apply a thin layer after your treatment has dried, and use the water cream in the morning and the richer cream at night.
What I would skip: a thick, balmy cream over your whole face on a humid day. Use it only on dry patches around the mouth and jaw.
For more options beyond acne treatment days, see the skin barrier repair creams I trust. For a richer option on dry patches, see the barrier creams like it in my Skinfix edit. I also put together cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum and the Barrier Serums and Creams Beside It.

Moisturizers with salicylic acid built in
Some moisturizers carry the treatment themselves. TULA's Breakout Star has 2% salicylic acid with niacinamide and azelaic acid for the marks breakouts leave, and the brand says it is oil free, alcohol free and non-comedogenic. Dermalogica's Acne Biotic Moisturizer uses 0.5% salicylic acid with a prebiotic blend and is aimed at adult acne from stress and hormones. BYOMA's Blemish moisturizer pairs salicylic acid with bakuchiol, and Peach Slices adds niacinamide and cica to an oil-free, silicone-free base.
How to use it: on mild days one of these can stand in for a separate treatment, since stacking acids can leave skin dry. If you already use a prescription or another acid, ask your dermatologist before adding one.
What I would skip: one of these on the same night as a strong exfoliating toner.

Daily sunscreen that stays light
Sunscreen is the step people skip most on acne prone skin, usually because it feels heavy. These are the light ones. innisfree Invisible Barrier is an SPF 47 serum with green tea and is labeled non-comedogenic. Beauty of Joseon Dayscreen is an SPF 30 moisturizer hybrid with ceramides, and Day Dew is a water-resistant SPF 50 with niacinamide, both labeled non-comedogenic. Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Control is an oil-free SPF 40 liquid that doubles as a primer, with licorice root that the brand says soothes breakout-prone skin. The Fresh-Moisture version suits drier days. Paula's Choice RESIST Daily Hydrating Fluid is an oil-free SPF 50 with a satin-matte finish and no white cast, and the 5% Vitamin C Sheer Moisturizer SPF 50 is a fragrance free option for evening out tone. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 has peptides and squalane.
Pairing tip: if your gel already has hydration, you can let a sunscreen be the only thing on top in the morning.
What I would skip: a dewy cream sunscreen on an oily T-zone in summer. Take the matte fluid there instead.

How I chose these
I chose by texture and by what the brand and the retailer say on the product page: an oil free or non-comedogenic label first, then ceramides and soothing ingredients for treatment days, then a sunscreen light enough to wear every morning. Every product detail here comes from the brand, Sephora or Ulta, and I am not a doctor, so a dermatologist has the final word on a prescription routine.
If your skin is reactive more than breakout prone, see the best moisturizer for sensitive skin. For the rest of the routine, there is the best exfoliator for acne prone skin and face masks for acne. Paula's Choice, Kiehl's and Clinique have their own brand pages, and the skincare shop has the rest.
How to pick and layer
Start with the texture that matches your skin on the day. If you are shiny by noon, choose a gel like Sofie Pavitt Skin Jelly or Paula's Choice CLEAR. For more of those, I also put together gels, water creams and light SPF for oily skin. If treatments leave you tight, add a barrier cream at night, and keep the sunscreen light in the morning. Change one product at a time and give it a couple of weeks, because that is the only way to know what caused what. A non comedogenic moisturizer is a good start, but your skin has the final vote. Keep the routine short, since skin that is already dealing with breakouts does not need a long shelf.
If you already own it, you can use La Roche-Posay Double Repair Moisturizer at night too, and I wrote about how.
If shine is the problem more than breakouts, I rounded up a shiny face moisturizer list with oil control gels and dewy creams.
