Leslie Blodgett saw something in a jar of loose minerals in a San Francisco shop and launched bare minerals in 1995 on a very simple promise. This edit covers the loose powders and newer foundations, the blush and bronzer, and the concealers, lip care and skin care that fill out the range.

A Jar of Loose Minerals in San Francisco: Getting to Know bareMinerals Again
The bare minerals story begins with a jar. Leslie Blodgett noticed a container of loose minerals in a San Francisco shop, saw potential in it, and launched the brand in 1995. Its first promise was a sentence that stuck: Makeup So Pure, You Can Sleep In It. The first line was sold on QVC in 1997, which seems the right home for a slightly odd product that makes more sense once you watch someone use it. The brand turned 30 in 2025, and I think what has kept it going is that it never forgot where it started.
The place to start is the loose powder. Original Loose Powder Mineral Foundation with SPF 15 is the one everybody talks about, talc-free and applied with a soft brush. Original Mineral Veil is the loose setting powder that goes on afterward, and the Loose Powder Concealer with SPF 20 is a more unusual thing, a concealer in powder form.
If loose powder feels like too much fuss, the newer formulas are friendlier. Complexion Rescue is a tinted moisturizer with SPF 30, and barePro 24HR comes as both a skin-perfecting powder foundation and a matte liquid with SPF 20. Swirl the brush on the lid, tap off the excess, and buff in small circles. Start at the center of the face and work outward, so the edges look like skin and not a mask. If you use the setting powder too, take a fluffier brush and press it lightly over the T-zone only, then leave the cheeks alone.

Blush, bronzer and a good finish
Blush is where I find the brand most fun. The Gen Nude line is soft and easy to wear, and there are a few formats depending on how much you like to fuss.
Gen Nude Powder Blush is the plain, sweepable one, a good starting point if you have never owned a mineral blush. The 2 in 1 Highlighting Powder Blush gives you a little glow with the color, so it is the one for a fast morning. The Dew in One Lip and Cheek Stick is a single stick for both, and I keep it in a coat pocket for touch-ups on the way somewhere. If you like a warm face, the Gen Nude Blonzer is a mix of blush and bronzer, and the Complexion Rescue Liquid Blonzer does the same thing in liquid form.
Then there is the Original Mineral Veil Setting Spray, the finishing step. Hold it at arm's length and mist once. It is a good way to take the flat, powdered look off a face, especially if you have used a bit more powder than you meant to.
Put blush higher than you think, on the tops of the cheekbones and out toward the temples. It is the easiest way to look awake, and it works with almost every shade of foundation on the page. If you are not sure, smile, and place it on the round part of the cheek, then blend back toward the ear. A blush that looks too strong can be softened with a clean brush or a fingertip of moisturizer pressed over the top.

Concealers, lips and a little skin care
Concealers are the part of the range I overlook until I need one. bareMinerals makes two very different kinds, and they suit different faces.
Original Liquid Mineral Brightening Concealer is the lighter, more luminous one, best around the eyes, where you want to keep skin moving. The barePro 16HR Matte Concealer with SPF 25 is the fuller one, made for the spots that show up on a bad day. Use the lighter one on the inner corner of the eye and the matte one only where you truly need cover.
The range also stretches into lips and skin. The Dewy Lip Gloss-Balm is an easy one, a gloss and a balm in one, and the Ageless Phyto-Retinol Lip Mask is the one I use at night. On the skin side, Skinlongevity Cushion Cloud Foaming Cleanser is a soft foam that takes the day off, and the Barrier Boosting Serum sits underneath a moisturizer.
What I would skip: layering the matte concealer over a serum or cream that is still wet, and applying loose powder over dry patches. Both look uneven within an hour. Let each layer settle first, and press in rather than rub. If your skin is easily irritated, try any new serum on a small area for a few days first.

What I would build first
If I were starting from scratch, I would buy three things: the Original Loose Powder Mineral Foundation, one blush from the Gen Nude line, and the lighter concealer. That is a full face in about five minutes, and every piece is easy to build on. Later you can add the setting spray, a lip product for the evening, and one of the newer liquids for days when you want more coverage. There is no rush to own the whole range, and the best use of it is to fill gaps as you notice them.
Start with a light hand and add more only where you need it. Mineral powder builds as you go, so a small amount reads as skin, and a large amount reads as makeup. Wash your brushes once a week with a gentle soap, and let them dry flat. A clean brush makes even a simple powder look polished, and that is all most mornings need.
